Occasionally, even with massive budgets and extensive marketing efforts, movies fail to make an impact at the box office. Despite appearing promising, some films receive lackluster responses from critics and audiences, resulting in disappointing earnings that fall far short of the production and marketing expenses. Even actors like George Clooney sometimes fail to give their films a much-needed boost.
Disney’s Tomorrowland, starring George Clooney, turned out to be a massive box-office disappointment, resulting in a huge loss for the studio. This financial setback ranks as Disney’s worst since the $190 million loss incurred by the western epic, The Lone Ranger, back in 2013.
George Clooney’s Star Power Couldn’t Save Tomorrowland
On the surface, Tomorrowland seemed like a promising project with a solid lineup – George Clooney as the lead, Brad Bird as the director, and an intriguing sci-fi concept of exploring adventures in a parallel dimension. However, despite these elements, the movie failed to live up to expectations at the box office.
Despite a seemingly respectable worldwide box office haul of $209 million, the movie’s enormous production and promotional costs overshadowed its earnings. The future direction of director Brad Bird, whether he returns to live-action filmmaking, remains uncertain. George Clooney reportedly demanded $25 million for his role in the film.
Tomorrowland’s performance over the holiday fell significantly short of expectations, bringing in only $43 million. The cast included George Clooney, Hugh Laurie, Britt Robertson, and Raffey Cassidy. Based on a Disney theme park ride, the film had a disappointing box office opening and received mixed reviews during the Memorial Day weekend in 2015.
Adding to the list of big-budget original films that flopped in 2015, Tomorrowland joined the ranks of Jupiter Ascending and Seventh Son, showcasing the risky nature of investing in high-cost filmmaking. As studios witness the success of relatively lower-budget hits like Spy and Pitch Perfect 2, they are reevaluating the costs of creating potential franchises.
George Clooney Has Replaced Ben Affleck As Batman
In an unexpected twist, the initial plan of having George Clooney replace Ben Affleck as Batman in The Flash movie was met with dissatisfaction from fans. Online discussions heated up as fans voiced their criticism and discontent about the direction the film was taking.
Recent reports have unveiled intriguing details about the original ending of The Flash movie, hinting at Ben Affleck’s highly anticipated return as Batman and the exploration of the Batman multiverse. The initial script featured an intense showdown between Batfleck and the vengeful Deathstroke portrayed by Joe Manganiello. However, the narrative evolved, leading the Dark Knight from the Snyderverse to traverse the Multiverse to find his way back.
Tomorrowland can be rented on Apple TV.
