The medieval epic drama series by David Benioff and D.B Weiss ran from the yeyar2011 to the year 2019. Based on the “A Song of Ice and Fire” series of books written by George R.R Martin, Game of Thrones depicted a fictional war-torn world rife with political conspiracies and betrayal. The series soon included a supernatural element, with a paranormal threat soon coming forward to endanger the sanctity of the continent of Westeros.

During Games of Thrones’ run, the series won massive critical acclaim, winning an incredible 59 Emmy Awards throughout its tenure. The series came under heavy scrutiny when it devised an ending that left many fans with a bad after-taste like the show The Sopranos  once did. Benioff and Weiss were ridiculed all over the internet as well as in the critic forums for trying to rush a series that needed to take it slow. The conclusion looked hap-hazard and the fans were not pleased. The  ending saw the abrupt end to the tale of the Night King, who was proclaimed as the series’ greatest villain of all time. Bran Stark was made the King while Jon Snow was forced to venture beyond the wall. Queen Daenerys Targaryen descended into the fires of villainy and was taken down by Snow with a literal stab to the chest before she could do anymore damage to her legacy.

The Prequel series – House of the Dragon, will be set many years before the events of the first season off Game of Thrones. Set for a 2022 release date, the show has high expectations riding on its shoulders. HBO was unsure whether it would be able to have a successful run at this year’s  Emmy awards. But with Succession winning the Best Drama Series, beating powerful competitors like Ozark and Better Call Saul, their confidence has gone up significantly. Watchmen, Last Week Tonight, and Bad Education also won Emmy awards. With many new shows taking the charge of leading the HBO frontlines, the premiere date announcement for the Game of Thrones prequel series might come as a bit of a surprise.

HBO revealed that it was making a 10 Episode Game of Thrones prequel series last year. The 10 episode series will be directed by Miguel Sapochnik, one of the veteran directors of Game of Thrones. Another Co-Director will be Ryan Condal of Colony fame. The series will take many storyline cues from George R.R Martin’s 20018 novel called Fire and Blood. The book explored the life and times of House Targaryen as  they ventured out of Valyria of Essos and conquered the continent of Westeros. The original series of Game of Thrones explored how people lived in the aftermath of the Targaryen Invasion of Westeros. Multiple decades have passed since the Targaryens were  brought down by Robert’s Rebellion, the war that led to the downfall of the House of the Dragon.

The peculiar things about the book written by George R.R Martin is that it spans across many years and is more like an anthology of stories from different monarchs of different times and eras. We do not know if the series will also take the same direction. Casting for the show is also underway. Reports surfaced recently that claimed the show runners were trying to rope in actresses to play prominent female characters for the show. Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower will soon be featured among the cast list. The two women are central to the plot of the Game of Thrones TV Show titled House of the Dragon. Another big part will be played by the Character Daemon Targaryen. Casting for this role is yet to be finalized.

Game of Thrones, despite a lack luster ending, won a whopping number of international awards and set the benchmark for other drama series to follow. Forget Schitt’s Creek, HBO’s Game of Thrones still holds the record for winning a whopping 12 Awards in a single year, the highest for any show in this category. The awards were won by the fifth and sixth season of the HBO show. It also ties with West Wing, L.A Law, and Hill Street Blues, for winning four winning Four Awards in the Outstanding Drama Series Category.

House of the Dragon is yet to officially begin production. HBO is contemplating a pause and proceed strategy for now. A show of this caliber would require a high production value, the kind of which is not possible during the current COVID-19 Scenario. Preliminary work on the show still continues as explained by Casey Bloys.

House of the Dragon will also take cues from the book Dance of the Dragons. The book will tell us the Westerosi conquest of House Targaryen. It is a bloody and nasty battle of betrayal, violence, and air-to-air medieval dragon warfare. 2022 is a long while away but we believe that the show is worth the wait. Dance of the Dragons is one of the most acclaimed entries into the Game of Thrones series and it is about time HBO started work on a Made for TV Show based on it.

The show will probably feature new actors. Game of Thrones was the breakout role for many actors who starred in it. The actors who played Jon Snow (Kit Karrington), Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), Arya Stark (Maisie Williams), and Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) went on to become big names in the world of Hollywood. We believe the new House of the Dragon Games of Thrones prequel show will not only give us a solid take of an incredible story arc but also gift the world with a new generation of fresh faces that will one day become acting powerhouses.

HBO has high hopes for the show. Let’s see if the Game of Thrones prequel can pass the test of Fire and Blood!!
