James Gunn is going for a complete revamp at DC Studios, yet he’s chosen to retain some fan favorites including Gal Gadot. Although the director’s vision for a Wonder Woman film remains unclear, it is confirmed that the Fast Five actress will not share the same fate as Henry Cavill or Ben Affleck. Fans have welcomed this decision, though they harbor doubts about the trajectory of the established Wonder Woman character.
Taking the reins of DC Studios in November 2022, James Gunn and Peter Safran opted to replace the DCEU, which was producing low-quality outputs, with a new DC Universe (DCU).
Gal Gadot Is Confirmed To Be DCU’s Wonder Woman
Both Gal Gadot and James Gunn have confirmed the return of the Red Notice actress to the DCU. Regrettably, Patty Jenkins, the director behind the two Wonder Woman films, was no longer retained by the studios. In a conversation with Flaunt, the Death On The Nile actress recounted her meeting with Gunn and Safran:
“They told me, ‘You’re in the best hands. We’re going to develop Wonder Woman 3 with you. [We] love you as Wonder Woman— you’ve got nothing to worry about”
But neither Gunn nor the Studio has confirmed any news about making Wonder Woman 3. In fact, the Guardians of the Galaxy director may create a new story arc for Wonder Woman to fit his distinctive DCU vision. Gunn has, however, greenlit an HBO Max prequel series titled Paradise Lost, offering an origin story for Themyscira, also known as Paradise Island, the land of the Amazonians.
Gal Gadot Remains While Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck Exit
While Gal Gadot’s retention has been met with fan approval, there is mass disapproval for DC Studios’ decision to part ways with Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck. Both actors followed in the steps of their Batman v Superman director, Zack Snyder. It appears Cavill and Affleck will always be Snyder’s Superman and Batman.
However, another reason for retaining Gal Gadot over her co-stars may lie in the fact that her portrayal of Wonder Woman was unanimously welcomed, making it a challenge to replace her. Cavill faced criticism for embodying a darker and grim Superman, whereas Affleck’s Batman was considerably more mature, which failed to resonate with certain sections of the audience.
Fans are excited to see what DCU holds for the Keeping Up with the Joneses actress’s future and how the Wonder Woman story unfolds. In the meantime, Gadot continues her array of action roles, with her appearance in Netflix’s latest Heart of Stone, where she assumes the role of a spy.
