Joss Whedon’s reputation as a DCU director isn’t really that great. Whedon worked on Justice League (2017) which received poor ratings from the audience. In the past, the director has been accused of displaying unprofessional behavior on the sets.
Zack Snyder initially planned out everything and was in full swing to present the fans with his version of Justice League, however, Snyder had to leave the project due to a family tragedy. In his absence, what Whedon created was underwhelming. Many unnecessary scenes were added, like the one where Barry Allen falls on Wonder Women’s body. Gal Gadot reportedly refused to do that scene but Whedon decided to do it with a stunt double.
Is Joss Whedon an unprofessional director?
Director Joss Whedon, well-known for working on Marvel’s The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron, was once slammed by actor Ray Fisher for displaying unprofessional behavior. In 2020, the actor tweeted,
“Joss Wheadon’s on-set treatment of the cast and crew of Justice League was gross, abusive, unprofessional, and completely unacceptable. / He was enabled, in many ways, by Geoff Johns and Jon Berg. / Accountability>Entertainment”
Whedon took over the post-production duties and reshot some scenes after Justice League‘s actual director, Zack Snyder, left the project because of a family tragedy.
Gal Gadot refused to do this one scene in the movie
Joss Whedon’s final version of Justice League was disappointing. The movie contained a scene in which Barry Allen falls on top of Wonder Woman. Whedon’s attempt to add a comedy scene in the movie backfired as it only made fans cringe. As per reporter Grace Randolph, Gal Gadot refused to do that scene as she didn’t want Wonder Woman to get sexualized. The reporter wrote,
“Here’s one I was the first to report: Gal Gadot didn’t want to film this scene, so Whedon did it w/ a stunt double. That’s why you can’t see her face.”
Joss Whedon reportedly asked a stunt double to shoot the scene with Ezra Miller. Another user noted under the reporter’s tweet that Whedon added a similar scene in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) when Bruce Banner falls on top of Natasha Romanoff.
Joss Whedon was reportedly not a fan of Zack Snyder’s Justice League
After Zack Snyder’s exit, Joss Whedon had complete control of the movie. He made some edits and removed a lot of stuff. Filmmaker Kevin Smith once appeared on the Fatman Beyond podcast and recalled that a “special effects guy” claimed that Whedon trash-talked about Snyder’s version. He said,
“[Whedon] would cut down, dismiss, and be negative about Zack’s version, which he had seen and all these people had made together without him and stuff. The guy had said he was kind of uncomfortable on-set because the people he was talking to about not liking that version of the movie were all people that had helped make that version of the movie, so that I think is probably the unprofessional thing.”
Zack Snyder’s Justice League was released in 2021 and without a doubt, it managed to satisfy the demands of almost every DC fan.
