DC Studios has gone through tonnes of changes over the last year and significantly after James Gunn and Peter Safran took over as the co-CEOs of the studio. While fans were excited at first, it was not the same after Henry Cavill’s departure was announced from the DCU, just days after he made his comeback in the 2022 Dwayne Johnson starrer Black Adam. The new executives did not want to continue with the Man of Steel star and will be introducing a new Superman with James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy.
However, new reports revealed that before Gunn’s Gods & Monsters, the studio had plans to bring the fan-favorite Superman back in the Ezra Miller starrer, The Flash.
Henry Cavill Had a Cameo in The Flash (2023)
DC fans have been waiting for the return of Henry Cavill since his last appearance in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Following the huge fan demand, the Black Adam star Dwayne Johnson did bring him back with the 2022 film. Unfortunately, it also became his last appearance as the Kryptonian superhero.
James Gunn announced that the Ezra Miller starrer The Flash would reset the DC Extended Universe, which would also cause the recasting of most of the characters. While Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot did appear in the 2023 DC film, Cavill announced his departure soon after his comeback in Black Adam.
However, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that he could have joined his fellow DC co-stars in The Flash’s alternated ending. According to THR, the 2023 movie went through multiple changes and had three alternate endings.
One of these alternate endings also featured Cavill’s Superman alongside Sasha Calle’s Supergirl and the Wonder Woman star. The cameo would have teased these characters’ future appearances and projects in the DCU, also suggesting that the studio did have plans for Cavill’s return as Kal-El.
DC Studios Was Allegedly Open For Henry Cavill’s Return
According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Flash originally ended on the courthouse steps with Michael Keaton’s Batman and Sasha Calle’s Supergirl. It would have indicated that Barry did not reset the timeline as he thought he did.
However, after Henry Cavill decided to come back with his Black Adam cameo, the studio decided on another alternated ending, which featured him alongside Wonder Woman, Keaton’s Batman, and Calle’s Supergirl. The report claims that the Batman V Superman star was also in talks to return as the DC superhero in a new Superman movie.
Other than him, the studio reportedly also had something in mind for Calle’s Supergirl, and Gal Gadot’s appearance would have teased a third installment in Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman series. The ending was shot in September last year before James Gunn and Peter Safran officially took over the DC Studios.
However, under their plan to reboot the DCU with The Flash, the co-CEOs once again altered the ending of The Flash and scrapped plans surrounding Cavill’s Superman, Gadot’s Wonder Woman, and Supergirl. The studio was able to keep the new ending secret and reportedly did not even screen-test it.
The Flash is playing in theatres.
