Fox Studios Forced Ryan Reynolds to Star in Green Lantern Before Saying Yes to Deadpool: "Will you please be my wife?"

Ryan Reynolds is among the most sought-after and highly-paid actors in Hollywood. The star rose to fame with The Proposal featuring Sandra Bullocks. He has worked in several hit movies like Red Notice, Free Guy, 6 Underground, Blade: Trinity, and more. However, the film that completely swirled his world around was Deadpool. The anti-hero lead film smashed the box office with an overwhelming response from the audience.

Talking about the same Reynolds shared with Entertainment Weekly,

“With Green Lantern, I don’t think anyone ever figured out exactly what it was. That isn’t to say the hundreds of men and women didn’t work their fingers to the bone to make it as good as possible. It also fell victim to the process in Hollywood which is like poster first, release date second, script last. At the time, it was a huge opportunity for me so I was excited to try and take part in it. I did however write a letter to Fox right before I had to decide whether or not I was gonna do Green Lantern. I asked one last time sort of like the groom standing at the alter, ‘Will you please be my wife?’ and they said they couldn’t pull the trigger on Deadpool. For too many reasons too boring to illustrate, it just didn’t work.”

The film was directed by the famous director Martin Campbell. Due to the film’s negative response and substandard box office performance, Warner Bros. dismissed plans for a sequel.

Reason for the success of Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool over Green Lantern

If we compare the two superhero movies, Deadpool was undoubtedly a passion project. Reynolds had to go through lots of struggle to get the film made. The lead character was foul-mouthed, a miscreant, and the complete opposite of what the heroes represented in the past. The studios were very hesitant about the box office performance of the film in comparison to other superhero films.

But the film completely shook up the comic movies for the better, and audiences rushed to see a fresh and fun take on comic-based films. Making Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool was a risk but that paid off excellently. The third part of Deadpool is in production.

Deadpool and Green Lantern are available for streaming on Apple TV.
