Tom Cruise’s boldness and bravery know no bounds and have only been increasing with every movie. Performing stunts is a rather dangerous territory in itself and somehow, Tom Cruise knows how to raise the stakes even higher. In fact, his upcoming film, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One has the most dangerous stunt of the actor’s career. This is coming from a guy who has flown an actual helicopter during a high-speed chase!
In the seventh installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise, Tom Cruise will be seen riding a bike off a cliff and BASE jumping, something which requires serious training. And while this is going to be his biggest stunt yet, it looks like Dead Reckoning Part Two is all set to break the record.
Is Tom Cruise Going Bigger with Dead Reckoning Part 2?
Tom Cruise recently turned sixty-one but that does not mean he is going to stop risking his life with insane stunts. For Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Cruise fulfilled his childhood dream of riding a motorcycle off a cliff. On top of that, Cruise performed the most dangerous stunt of his entire career multiple times just to get the perfect shot, even though director Christopher McQuarrie was quite satisfied with the first one.
Now, it looks like Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two will have Cruise going for bigger and better stunts. In an interview with ABC News, McQuarrie revealed that the motto for their films is, “that’s a terrible idea. When do we start?” After all, terrible ideas make the best memories, or in this case, the best movies!
McQuarrie continued,
“The more ill-advised something seems, that’s how we know we’re onto something. And what you’re seeing in this movie is just Tom and I taking everything we’ve learned from all the movies previously — not just Mission: Impossible — [but] Top Gun, Edge of Tomorrow. All the movies we’ve done separately and together and just applying it to this one.”
Quarrie also hinted that the second part of the film will be even better as the team is of the belief that there is always room for some improvement.
“So if you go back and look at the other Mission: Impossibles you can see within other sequences, the dress rehearsals for the sequences we’re doing now, after every movie, we just look at one another and say ‘we can do better.’”
Better than jumping off a cliff? While riding a bike? Cruise has truly gone daredevil mode and it does not seem like he is willing to stop anytime soon.
Will Tom Cruise Ever Give Up on Stunts
Given the fact that Cruise is now in his sixties, some might be wondering if the actor might be stepping down from performing his own stunts anytime soon. Well, he has the answer to your query and let’s just say that Cruise has many, many more stunts ahead of him.
During his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, the host proposed this exact question to Cruise. Jimmy Kimmel asked Cruise if he would still be jumping off cliffs and performing HALO jumps at the age of 80 or 100. The actor replied,
“I’m planning on it. I’ve been doing it my whole life. Always writing, always working on stories and writing skits. I was that kid that, I would crawl out of the attic and I’d be on the roof and I was about 4 years old because I liked looking at the sky and the clouds and stars.”
Cruise is the best example of the saying, ‘Age is nothing but a number.’ Of course, it helps that the actor is in such good shape that he can afford to pull off dangerous stunts. It’s only onward and upward for Cruise!
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One will release in theatres on July 12, 2023. And Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two is scheduled to release on June 28, 2024.
