Wolverine is one of the most beloved characters from the Marvel comics, and Hugh Jackman’s on-screen version is one of the most memorable. He has played the role in a considerable number of movies, including the X-Men franchise, and the Wolverine franchise. His story, however, came to a dramatic and tragic end in Logan, where the immortal character met his demise.
Though many thought this was the end for Jackman’s character, it was revealed that Wolverine would be appearing in Ryan Reynold’s Deadpool 3. Though this will be a different, completely new version of his character, the news had quite mixed reactions.
Logan Director Does Not Want Hugh Jackman To Bring Back Wolverine For Deadpool 3
Though many people love the idea of characters who have passed coming back on the screen, many think that the dead should stay dead and franchises should commit to their end. Among these supporters, there is also James Mangold, the director of Logan, also known for his work in Ford vs Ferrari and Girl Interrupted.
“I can’t say that there’s a part of me that doesn’t wish that we’d let it be,” he said. “But there was always going to be another Wolverine. There could be a baby Wolverine and a cartoon Wolverine. As much liquid as they can squeeze out of that rag, they’re going to try to.” He stated.
Mangold believes that Hugh Jackman‘s Wolverine storyline met a satisfying end, one that he thinks was right for the character. Though the director is not thrilled at the idea, he expected a different version to come sooner or later, stating that franchises like Marvel have the tendency to milk a character for all its worth. He still however feels that he told his story and showcased his vision the best he could and wishes for that to stay untouched.
Fans Support Logan Director As He Wishes Wolverine To Not Return In Deadpool 3
James Mangold’s sentiments for Wolverine’s character seem to be shared by quite a few online, as many voiced their support on the matter on Twitter. Some fans were quite upset with the news of Hugh Jackman’s return as they invested quite a lot in Wolverine’s storyline and ultimately his death, only to see all that erased for Deadpool 3, even afraid that Deadpool might ruin their beloved character.
“Remember when a huge aspect of LOGAN was that a corporation couldn’t stand the idea of Wolverine dying, so created a clone that looked like Hugh Jackman but was missing the core humanity that made audiences fall in love with him to begin with?” Stated a fan.
Some fans, however, don’t agree with this, stating that Wolverine in Deadpool 3 feels right as the two characters interact quite a lot in the comics. They believe that this character was held back in his previous appearances and think that being part of an R-rated movie might be just what the character needs. Some even stated that since this will be a different variant of the mutant played by the same actor, the sentiment did not track.
