Salma Hayek is remembered for her films, especially the eternally beloved Desperado, and her Instagram pics. While fans of the star appreciate her dressing style, most don’t consider her to be a fashionista and this has offended the actress.
The Frida star considers herself an important figure in the fashion industry because as per her, she was the one who brought back an old forgotten trend from the 1950s. However, she’s upset that no one ever gives her credit for that move.
What Fashion Trend Did Salma Hayek Bring Back To Hollywood?
In an interview, Salma Hayek confessed that she thought she should get credit for bringing back the tiara in fashion again. Today, wearing a tiara on the red carpet is no big deal for many starlets. But back in the 90s, no one was wearing it. But Hayek decided to go against the grain and defied all of her well-wishers to wear something she wanted.
So at the 1997 Vanity Fair Oscars after-party, she wore a shimmering floor-length Armani gown complete with a white bedazzled tiara. In an interview, the actress revealed how difficult it was to wear that accessory. She said:
“I decided to wear a tiara, and everybody told me I was crazy, and it was ridiculous, and it was gonna be pretentious, and everybody tried to convince me not to do it- like my manager, my stylist, my publicist. And I wore the tiara anyway, and you know what happened- everybody started wearing a tiara after that, and I never got any credit for that trend because I was an unknown. But it’s okay, I know.”
But how did the tiara-wearing trend begin? It was first begun by one of the biggest Hollywood stars ever in the 1950s.
The Ancient And Modern Tiara Trend Of Hollywood
The tiara was first popularized as a red-carpet fashion statement by one of the greatest actors in the history of Hollywood- Elizabeth Taylor. She wore one in 1957 and then star Eva Gardner followed her style in 1960. After that the tiara appeared only in stops and starts and no one used it to make a fashion statement as such. Or at least it never caught on as a trend again. Then came Salma Hayek.
She brought the headpiece back in 1997 when she placed it on her bouffant bun. After that, Natalie Portman wore one in 2005 during the Academy Awards red carpet although it was stylized as a thin vine headband. This was followed up by Lupita N’yongo who wore a slim version of the tiara in 2014, and then again in 2017 when Ruth Negga put the red headband on her head at the Oscars red carpet.
So who will be the next? Who knows, but the actress who steps out wearing a tiara for her red-carpet event, better send a silent thank you to Salma Hayek.
