Emma Watson and Tom Felton gained stardom at very young ages with their roles in the Harry Potter franchise. Emma Watson played the role of Hermoine Granger, and Tom Felton was cast as Draco Malfoy. The films based on J. K. Rowling’s novels were box office hits, and the fan following of the movies has only grown over the years. The star cast of the film has grown up together and shares a great bond. However, Felton has one regret to date, and it is related to his co-star Emma Watson.
Tom Felton revealed in his memoir about his embarrassing moment when he made fun of Emma Watson’s dance, which hurt her feelings.
Tom Felton had a real Draco Malfoy moment when he hurt Emma Watson’s feeling
Tom Felton played the role of Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter film franchise. Malfoy was a student in Harry Potter‘s school year belonging to the Slytherin house. He played Malfoy throughout all eight movies, from 2001’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone to 2011’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2. In the film, he was a bully who tricked and hurt people to get whatever he wanted.
The actor talked in detail about his character in his memoir Beyond the Wand: The Magic and Mayhem of Growing Up a Wizard. In the memoir, he revealed an incident for which he still feels ashamed. He was 12 years old when he joined the series, and Watson was only 9.
Once he and fellow actor Josh Herdman heard that Emma Watson had put together a dance show in her dressing room. So they stormed over there and sneered at her performance.
He wrote,
“We sniggered our way down to Emma’s show, and the sniggers grew louder as she danced. We were just being shitty boys, largely out of awkwardness and because we thought taking the piss was cool, but Emma was visibly upset by our thoughtless reaction. I did feel like a bit of a d-ck, and rightly so.”
Felton said he apologized to the Beauty and the Beast actress and she accepted his apology. He also wrote that mocking was a stupid, teenage act of thoughtlessness, the sort of thing that happens every day.
Tom Felton was affected by his shameful act related to Emma Watson
The actor wrote in his memoir that even after seeking an apology for his action, he could not forget the incident. He asked himself,
“So why does that moment stick in my memory? Why is it so painful for me to recall?”
He wrote his thoughts on the situation,
“The answer, I think, is that I’ve grown to understand with the passing of the years that of all of us, Emma had the most to deal with, the most difficult situation to negotiate, and from the earliest age. And the pressures she experienced went further than just having to deal with stupid boys…She was in many ways treated like an adult from the day she was cast. It’s a phenomenon that can, I think, be more difficult for girls than for boys. They are unfairly sexualized in the media and beyond…the last thing she needed, in an environment that should have been — and normally was — safe and friendly and familial, was Josh and me laughing at her dance.”
Felton added,
“And that’s why I’m glad that our friendship did not founder on the rocks of my insensitivity, but became something deeper. A touchstone for both of our lives.”
Felton and Watson became close friends, and Watson also contributed to Felton’s book, where she referred to him as her soulmate.
