Warner Bros.’ The Flash’s disappointing box office performance has increased the pressure on DC Studios’ heads, James Gunn and Peter Safran. Now, more than ever, the fate of the DCEU rests on the shoulders of Gunn and Safran’s upcoming Superman: Legacy. Henry Cavill left The Witcher to reprise his role as Superman but lost both roles. The leading contender for the role of Lois Lane, Emma Mackey, rose to prominence for her portrayal of Maeve Wiley in the hit series Sex Education.

Superman: Legacy is written and directed by James Gunn, who previously worked on the Guardians of the Galaxy films. Gunn held auditions on the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank on the weekend of June 17 as part of the casting process.

Gunn has been keeping the details of these auditions under wraps as he prepares to present the final cuts to a committee of executives, including Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav. In the screen tests, the roles of Superman and Lois Lane were split among six actors and six actresses.
On the first day of testing, we saw pairs consisting of actors like Nicholas Hoult and Rachel Brosnahan, Tom Brittney, Phoebe Dynevor, David Corenswet, and Emma Mackey. Male actors donned all the trappings of Clark Kent from The Daily Planet, while their female counterparts portrayed the fiery Lois Lane.
Hoult, Brittney, and Corenswet all gave it another go in the Superman costume on the second day of screen tests. Only Emma Mackey, who had previously played Lois Lane opposite the male leads, was recast in the role. Some may take her presence on the second day as evidence of her viability as a candidate, but reliable sources advise against making any hasty judgments.

Superman: Legacy‘s success will have far-reaching effects because it will pave the way for future films and television shows in the DC Extended Universe. The interval between the release of Man of Steel and the release of Superman: Legacy means that Gunn and Safran need to create as much buzz as possible for the upcoming sequel.
Superman: Legacy and the talented people chosen to bring these beloved characters to life will determine the fate of the DC Extended Universe. Emma Mackey’s career could take a giant leap forward if she lands the role of Lois Lane.
