Ed Boon Announces New Trailer and New Character to be Revealed all before Mortal Kombat is Playable at Evo 2023!

Winter gaming season is coming, so that naturally means every game coming out during that period is currently bombarding our social media with marketing, announcements, leaks and promotional materials right now. One such title is of course the upcoming, timeline-resetting Mortal Kombat 1, and with it a whole multitude of questions as to what we should expect, how things are now in this new universe we find ourselves in, and perhaps most importantly, exactly which characters we’ll be left to play with after Liu Kang rearranged everything we know during Mortal Kombat 11’s Aftermath expansion.

Ed Boon’s Mortal Kombat 1 keeps getting Bigger and Better

Mortal Kombat has always been a huge fighting franchise, with it going toe-to-toe with Street Fighter and Tekken for the gong of being the biggest and best fighting game ever. The title continually swaps hands, and the developers behind the three titles are well aware of the others, and as such, respect between the three developers/titles is always there. However, this time feels different. Street Fighter 6 released earlier this year, and whilst it received rave reviews, there was very little attention given to the title compared to that of Mortal Kombat 1.

Tekken 8 recently closed out its first closed network test, which we played and loved, but while the game doesn’t have a release date as of yet, the fanfare and hype around it are relatively minimal, bar the most die-hard of fans.

Then you come to Mortal Kombat 1, and it’s all everyone can talk about. In a year featuring Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Starfield, being the third most anticipated title is nothing to sniff at, and it genuinely feels like Mortal Kombat 1 could be the culmination of three decades worth of experience and lessons learned for NetherRealm Studios.

Or, it could be another masterclass from Ed Boon and co. drumming up interest and hype like they always do, but I’m hoping it’s the former.

On the topic of Ed Boon, during a recent trip to the ER – we hear he’s fine, don’t worry – Boon decided to pass the time by an impromptu Q&A, answering quick-fire questions from his fans, and in the process, casually slipping in new information to once again stir the melting pot of expectations for the game.

A few fans graciously asked after him, to which he thanked them for their concern and moved on, obviously unwilling to divulge such personal information regarding why he was there etc. Other fans took the opportunity to ask questions relating to the franchise as a whole, such as his favourite guest character – he didn’t answer – and so on.

However, it was his answer to one fan asking “Are we getting any new character reveals or anything at evo” that has everyone excited, with his response being a short and simple “Yes and yes!”.

Mortal Kombat 1 was recently announced to be playable at Evo 2023, the Las Vegas gaming and esports convention, and naturally there was the assumption more of the game would be shown off. Boon has now confirmed this, so question is, who and what is there left to share?

The game has already featured heavily at the PlayStation Showcase, Summer Games Fest, its own Kombat Kast and most recently at San Diego Comic Con, where Omni-Man, Homeland and Peacemaker were all announced as guest characters in the first Kombat Pack, due 2024. What else is left? More characters, apparently. More gameplay modes? Maybe.

What do you think of this? Who do you think will be announced at Evo 2023? Let us know in the comments!
