Barbie vs Oppenheimer is one of the biggest clashes of 2023 at the box office. If things remain unchanged then Dwayne Johnson’s live-action Moana remake will clash with a big Marvel film in 2025 that will quake the box office as well. However, fans aren’t convinced that this feud will actually happen.
Dwayne Johnson recently announced through his Instagram account that the live-action remake of the Disney animated film Moana will release on June 27, 2025. That’s nine years after the original was released. However, he will have Marvel-sized competition at the box office, and that too from one of their biggest IPs.
Will Dwayne Johnson’s Moana Clash With MCU’s Spider-Man 4 At The Box Office?
June 27, 2025, could see a big clash between Dwayne Johnson‘s Moana and MCU’s Spider-Man 4. Both of them could duke it out at the box office for supremacy just like Greta Gerwig‘s Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer will this year. While Moana’s release date has been confirmed, nothing has such has been officially clarified for Spider-Man 4.

The release date has been extrapolated from a Deadline article which stated that Sony has set November 8, 2024, and June 27, 2025, as the release dates for two untitled Marvel films. A recent report by Variety stated that Sony was looking at an October or November 2024 date for Venom 3.
Since Spider-Man 4 is being developed at Marvel Studios and Sony, although it has stalled due to the WGA strike, so it’s possible that it will take the June 27, 2025 date. However, people think that this is a stupid decision by Disney.

Fans Think Disney Is Making A Mistake By Pitting Moana And Spider-Man 4
Moana (2016) grossed $630 million at the global box office on a budget of $150 million. MCU’s three Spider-Man films starring Tom Holland have racked up $3.92 billion globally. As such, they are both heavy hitters and are owned by Disney. As such, many are stating that it makes zero sense for Disney to send two of its films to the box office on the same day and watch them cannibalize each other.
Here’s what people are saying about this decision:
It needs to be kept in mind that the release date of Spider-Man 4 can change because the ongoing WGA strike and the expected SAG strike have pressed pause on production. Also, it’s highly unlikely that Disney will let two of its tentpole films eat each other’s box office share.
Either Moana will be moved or Spider-Man will have to scoot over to some other date. Many think that Dwayne Johnson’s film has a higher possibility of moving because in the MCU, moving even one project will cause a domino effect that will delay the release of other movies. However, official information regarding the release date of Spider-Man 4 is awaited. It remains to be seen if and how this situation changes.
Moana and Spider-Man 4 are expected to be released on June 27, 2025.
