Is Dwayne Johnson going to be seen as Genie in Aladdin 2?

The internet was divided when Will Smith stormed the Oscars stage and slapped Chris Rock over a joke targeted towards his wife. This led many of his movies’ development to go to a halt. Considering Disney’s track record, they always try to steer away from bad press. As a result of it, reports circulated that Dwayne Johnson might take over the mantle of Genie in the sequel to Aladdin.

The news was first broken by Giant Freakin Robot who claimed that the Jumanji fame might join the sequel. The first movie directed by Guy Ritchie went on to collect $1.05 billion. Reports also stated that The Rock might also take over Johnny Depp in the future of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

But the rumor mill stopped when it was announced at the beginning of this year that Will Smith would return in the sequel. But this time, Giant Freakin Robot also stated in an exclusive report that we might see several Genies portrayed by big names besides Will Smith. Although the movie raised excitement about Aladdin 2 among the audience, some new developments point to a bleak future for the sequel.

Although it was reported that Dwayne Johnson is not going to bag another Disney role, the fate of Aladdin 2 doesn’t look good as of now. Recently one of the fans asked the lead Mena Massoud about the sequel to which he replied “very unlikely at this point”.

On top of that, the actor also passed some comments when the latest live-action remake of The Little Mermaid brought widespread criticism for it. The gravity of the situation even forced him to disable his Twitter account. All this suggests that we might face some delay in receiving updates about Aladdin 2.

Earlier it was also reported that a prequel film titled Genies was also under development. But eventually, it also got scrapped and we are yet to get more updates on the future of this live-action franchise. On the other hand, Dwayne Johnson is going to be seen in another Disney live-action remake of Moana. The actor who voiced the character of Maui in the animated movie is set to reprise his character in the remake as well.
