After years of work and dedication, Dwayne Johnson finally made his debut as the DC superhero Black Adam in the 2022 film. He worked on his solo DC feature for years and kept his fans updated about almost every aspect of the movie. Considering the marketing and the buzz surrounding Johnson’s DC debut, it was expected to be one of the biggest DC films. That’s what it seemed when it became the biggest domestic opening of the Jumanji star’s career.
However, things did not turn out as expected, and Johnson’s years of work went to waste after James Gunn took over as the co-CEO and allegedly canceled any further installments in the movie. During a recent conversation with Kevin Hart, the Rock opened up about its cancelation while blaming the new DC leadership.
Dwayne Johnson Opened Up About Black Adam Cancelation
Dwayne Johnson recently joined his friend and fellow actor Kevin Hart on his talk show Hart to Heart. As the conversation progressed, Hart questioned the reason behind the cancelation of Johnson’s 2022 DC feature, Black Adam, despite having such a big opening at the box office.
The 51-year-old wrestler-turned-actor explained how the new leadership at DC Studios is the biggest reason behind that. He shared that the movie went through several ups and downs due to the pandemic and the changes taking place at the studio.
“I think Black Adam is those movies that got caught in that web of new leadership, and that will always be one of the biggest mysteries, I think,” he said. The Jungle Cruise star further stated that it was the question on everyone’s mind as there were so many plus points for the movie.
He said that the 2022 film introduced a new superhero with plans to establish him under a franchise, had the biggest opening of his career, and brought back the fan-favorite Henry Cavill as Superman. It got canceled despite all that and having a diverse superhero cast.
Dwayne Johnson Says Black Adam Promoted Diversity
Talking about the 2022 DC movie with Kevin Hart, Dwayne Johnson recalled his reaction to the movie. He shared that he received a text from his Jumanji co-star on the opening weekend, saying that Black Adam featured a diverse superhero portfolio.
“We created a diverse superhero portfolio, where we had just men and women of color,” he shared. Johnson also shared that he had the same plans for Black Adam 2 as well, before being shut down by the studio. Like many others, Hart also explained that Johnson’s announcement shocked him, as he gave years of his career to a project that ended up suffering an unfortunate fate at the hands of new DC leadership.
Black Adam is available on Max.
