The all-new Zendaya and Timothee Chalamet starter “Dune” is just as intriguing and ambiguous as a desert’s shifting sand. However, fans couldn’t help but notice the parallels between the Dune film vs the legendary Star Wars franchise. Here are 14 similarities that you may or may not have noticed:

14. The Setting: Both fictions are set on undiscovered, distant planets against a sci-fi backdrop. But whereas the “Star Wars” franchise follows a story set in the past, in a galaxy lightyears away, “Dune” has a more futuristic setting.
13. The Stellar Scope: True to their character as space operas, both stories are primarily cosmic in scale. However, while “Star Wars” covers the unending expanse of the entire galaxy, “Dune” stays concentrated to a handful of planets, particularly to the battleground planet Arrakis.

12. Sandworms and Krayt Dragons: “Star Wars” is full of peculiar alien characters and “Dune” Movie’s sandworms are similar. These beast-like reptiles are native to Tatooine. They are widely feared by the Jawas and even the mighty Tusken Raiders.

7. Emperor Palpatine and Emperor Shaddam IV: Darth Vader and the Harkonnen seem like the main antagonists in their respective tales; they are not. But both of them have a dark, largely mysterious master looking over them.
6. The Jedi and Fremen: While the Jedi were guardians of the galaxy, the Fremen were victims of the Harkonnen’s crude imperialism. The Fremen then eventually stood against the invaders. However, much like Obi-Wan Kenobi, the Fremen sustained the desert planet Arrakis, until the protagonist called them into action.
5. The Skywalkers and House Atreides: Star Wars revolved around the Skywalkers and their struggle against the Sith. Similarly, the plot of Dune follows House Atreides in their battle against the Harkonnens.
4. The Force and The Spice: Both stories depict a religious, cult-like culture centered around a particular source of energy. In Dune, spice Melange is this energy. The spice gives its user the almost metaphysical ability to see multiple futures.
3. Anakin and Paul: Though Paul and Luke, the protagonists, share a lot of similarities, Luke’s father, Anakin, is also a part of the mix. Paul’s heroic stature is much like Luke’s. Paul’s eternal mission is to spread peace and harmony while maintaining control over the Empire. This has wildly hazardous consequences. These desires and consequences tie him to Anakin.
2. Baron Harkonnen and Darth Vader: The antagonists of the individual stories make them accurate, enjoyable epics. Darth Vader has a half-human-half Robotic body aiding him to breathe; Baron relies on “anti-gravity” Suppressors. Both the villains are infamous for their penchant for genocide, among other acts of ruthless brutality.
1. The Chosen One and Mahdi: The prequels of Star Wars tell the story of Anakin Skywalker. He is the “Chosen One”. Similarly, Fremen society indoctrinates Paul. They believe he is the Mahdi, or, in simple terms, “The One Who Will Lead Us to Paradise.”
