Frank Herbert’s Dune series fans are curious about how much Princess Irulan’s story Villeneuve has altered for the upcoming film. Shaddam IV, the 81st Padishah Emperor, and Anirul, a member of the ultra-secretive Bene Gesserit, are the parents of five daughters, the eldest of whom is Florence Pugh’s Princess Irulan.

She is a pawn in a larger machination and doesn’t show up until the end of Frank Herbert’s Dune novel. She was raised in the Bene Gesserit faith and taught the ways of the Reverend Mother from an early age so that she would have little control over her life.

As the Emperor’s daughter, she carries great prestige and is destined to marry the head of a powerful house in a cunning political alliance.

Paul’s rise to prominence among the Fremen and leadership of their rebellion against Harkonnen rule draws the attention of Emperor Shaddam, who dispatches troops to Arrakis to restore order. After a decisive victory for Paul’s Fremen forces over the Emperor’s Sardaukar, the latter are forced to negotiate a peace treaty in which Paul succeeds them as Emperor and weds Princess Irulan to ensure the continued production of spice.

You can watch Florence Pugh play her part as Princess Irulan when Dune 2 releases on November 3, 2023.
