Sophia Loren On Working With Marlon Brando In A Countess from Hong Kong
A Countess from Hong Kong, a romantic comedy directed by the legendary Charlie Chaplin, brought together two iconic actors, Sophia Loren, and Marlon Brando, in a captivating on-screen collaboration. Released in 1967, the film tells an enchanting story set against the backdrop of Hong Kong. Marlon Brando portrayed the character of Ogden Mears, an American diplomat, while Sophia Loren captivated audiences as Natascha, a beautiful and spirited countess.
The Two Women star shared an instance where the On the Waterfront star was scolded well by Charlie Chaplin for being late on the set and making others wait for him. Loren added that Brando couldn’t speak much after being railed by the movie director.
“Marlon Brando didn’t have a very good voice, very small. [after being berated by Chaplin] it went away.”
Sophia Loren Pulverized Marlon Brando For Misbehaving With Her
Loren recounts in her memoir the distressing experience she had with Brando during the filming of A Countess from Hong Kong. She vividly describes how, out of the blue, Brando made an unwelcome advance by groping her. Reacting swiftly and assertively, the Marriage Italian Style star turned to him, exuding a mix of anger and strength, and made it pretty clear to A Dry White Season star to stay within his limits.
“All of a sudden, he put his hands on me. I turned in all tranquility and blew in his face like a cat stroked the wrong way and said, ‘Don’t you ever dare to do that again. Never again!’ As I pulverized him with my eyes, he seemed small, defenseless, almost a victim of his own notoriety. He never did it again, but it was very difficult working with him after that.”
Loren’s fearless response to Brando’s inappropriate behavior conveyed a clear message that such actions were unacceptable and should not be promoted with silence. While Brando refrained from repeating his misconduct, the incident created a palpable tension between the two stars, making their collaboration a difficult endeavor.
