While the creation of Asteroid City appears fictional and mysterious due to its aesthetics, people have been proposing the use of extreme VFX in the movie. However, during a recent interview with ExtraTV Scarlett Johansson and Jason Schwartzman opened up about how the director strictly prohibited the use of VFX. “It’s all practical, and there isn’t any greenscreen” Johansson stated.

At one point we were inside the crater, like part of the wall behind us had to be green. And because of the size of the scope of how big the piece was, it didn’t fit inside the stage…but when they made it later on, they hand-painted, they made miniatures of that stuff and shoot that.” Johansson discussed the process.

Being adamant about how Wes Anderson avoided using VFX or greenscreen, the MCU actress further opened up about her experience.

It’s never computer generated. Which seems… especially coming from Marvel world, you know I remember talking to our editor and I mentioned something about VFX and he was so offended” Scarlett Johansson shared.

Discussing how she offended the editor of Asteroid City, Scarlett Johansson mentioned how he reacted to her proposition. “He said ‘we don’t do that stuff’ and I said, ‘but it seems like it would be much more efficient’” the actress recalled. She further added how she was shunned by the editor for her proposal. “He was like ‘don’t use that word’” Johansson shared.
