Although Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City appears superficial on the surface level, due to its extreme aesthetic appearance, Scarlett Johansson shared the truth behind the scenes with the public. Bewildering fans with the intricate work and crafted dollhouse-like drama, Anderson remarkably avoided using VFX in his sci-fi extravagance.
Opening up about the shooting and the set, during an interview, Scarlett Johansson and Jason Schwartzman discussed the authenticity of Wes Anderson’s filming. Stating how she is familiar with VFX due to her past association with Marvel, Johansson mentioned offending her crew mates when she tried introducing them to VFX and easing their work.
Wes Anderson Strictly Avoided Using VFX In Asteroid City
Wes Anderson‘s intricate work in Asteroid City with its matryoshka-like construction has been constantly bewildering the audience. Setting a strange and indifferent cosmic vibe with his movie, Anderson ventured to tell the story of five sad stargazers in the middle of the desert, trying to find each other all over again.
While the creation of Asteroid City appears fictional and mysterious due to its aesthetics, people have been proposing the use of extreme VFX in the movie. However, during a recent interview with ExtraTV Scarlett Johansson and Jason Schwartzman opened up about how the director strictly prohibited the use of VFX. “It’s all practical, and there isn’t any greenscreen” Johansson stated.
“At one point we were inside the crater, like part of the wall behind us had to be green. And because of the size of the scope of how big the piece was, it didn’t fit inside the stage…but when they made it later on, they hand-painted, they made miniatures of that stuff and shoot that.” Johansson discussed the process.
Being adamant about how Wes Anderson avoided using VFX or greenscreen, the MCU actress further opened up about her experience.
Scarlett Johansson Imposing VFX Offended Her Coworkers
Reminiscing about her time on the set of Asteroid City Scarlett Johansson mentioned how difficult it was for her to witness the excruciating work that went behind the movie. Stating how the crew hand painted and built each and everything to make it look authentic, the actress recalled her work experience with Marvel.
“It’s never computer generated. Which seems… especially coming from Marvel world, you know I remember talking to our editor and I mentioned something about VFX and he was so offended” Scarlett Johansson shared.
Discussing how she offended the editor of Asteroid City, Scarlett Johansson mentioned how he reacted to her proposition. “He said ‘we don’t do that stuff’ and I said, ‘but it seems like it would be much more efficient’” the actress recalled. She further added how she was shunned by the editor for her proposal. “He was like ‘don’t use that word’” Johansson shared.
Scarlett Johansson then returned to her initial conversation and confirmed that there was no use of VFX. “Everything is practical, it’s all miniatures and puppets.” the actress mentioned. Thus, although Johansson failed at her attempts to educate her co-workers about the advantages of VFX, she definitely made her point clear as to how Wes Anderson refrained from using greenscreen or VFX in Asteroid City.
