In 2019, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy affirmed their interest in exploring a project based on the iconic Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic video game. However, substantial updates have been scarce. Fortunately, there seems to be some progress, offering a glimmer of information for eager fans.
As per information from @MyTimeToShineHello, the recent speculation about a trilogy of films being under development appears to be unfounded. However, the source suggests that a project related to Knights of the Old Republic was indeed in progress prior to the production setbacks. Once the current issues are sorted out, this project is expected to resume its “active development.”
Disney Has A New Star Wars Script In The Works
The specifics of whether it will take the form of a movie or a Disney+ TV series are still uncertain. However, the latest information indicates that Laeta Kalogridis (known for Avatar and Shutter Island) was involved in crafting the script for the project.
Taking place nearly 4000 years prior to the emergence of the Galactic Empire, Knights of the Old Republic originated as a LucasArts video game launched in 2003. Since then, the franchise has expanded to include a variety of spin-off novels and comic books. Star Wars enthusiasts have long been eager for a live-action adaptation to come to fruition.
“There was NEVER a Knights of the Old Republic live action trilogy of movies planned despite reports. They considered a KOTOR project of some kind for years but it was never in active development. However, pre-strikes they finally started to put one into gears. They’ll keep working on it post-strikes,” the tweet read.
While currently just a rumor, stay tuned for further developments once the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes (hopefully) reach their conclusion.
Deborah Chow Has Some Advice For Future Star Wars Directors
Drawing from her profound understanding of Star Wars lore and her captivating vision for the saga’s future, Deborah Chow was queried about the advice she’d offer to upcoming directors of franchise projects. Reflecting on her own journey, she offered a straightforward suggestion: pursue original storylines that break free from the constraints of the extensive Star Wars canon.
“The biggest thing I learned from The Mandalorian is to not get hung up on the Star Wars of it all. It’s hard on a project where there is so much canon and so much responsibility to a fan base, but I would always go, ‘If you take the Star Wars out of this and it’s just people and human emotions, does this story still hold up?'”
However, the approach directors of upcoming projects will take—whether aligning with Deborah Chow’s innovative vision or opting for more conventional and traditional storytelling—remains a question to be answered.
