Johnny Depp is all set for his comeback on the big screen after winning the defamation case against his ex-wife Amber Heard. The actor is already cast in the 2023 Jeanne du Barry. After his ex-wife claimed to be a victim of domestic violence, the Hollywood star lost several projects. One of these projects included the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Depp portrayed Captain Jack Sparrow for more than a decade and was one of the favorite characters of fans.
With the actor cleared of all the accusations, fans were expecting to see their favorite character back in the franchise. However, recent updates related to the film are not something Pirates of the Caribbean fans would have expected.
Johnny Depp Would Not Reprise His Role as Jack Sparrow
Last week a report by The Son claimed that Johnny Depp could return in a sixth Pirates of the Caribbean film, A Day at Sea. The rumors started after the Sleepy Hollow star’s name was spotted on a call list for a Disney film.
The report also claimed that The Tourist star would also have a test shoot in February next year before the filming starts. The filming for A Day at Sea was expected to start in early February at a secret location in the U.K.
However, soon after the report came out, Daily Mail reported that The Lone Ranger actor is not reprising his role as Captain Jack Sparrow. Daily Mail’s sources said that the Pirates of the Caribbean star is not returning for a sixth film in the franchise.
As the studio dropped the actor before anything was proven against him, Depp was also determined not to go back to the franchise. He even claimed that he would not join the series even if the studio offers him $300 million.
Disney Allegedly Planning to Cancel Pirates of the Caribbean Franchise
Back in June 2020, Disney announced a Pirates of the Caribbean spin-off with Margot Robbie. The film was expected to focus on a female-led with a different kind of story. However, this did not go well with Johnny Depp fans. The news gave momentum to #NoJohnnyNoPirates on Twitter.
Although people admitted that Margot Robbie is a great actress, they were not supportive of her taking over the Dark Shadows star. Earlier this month, the Birds of Prey star revealed that the studio has canceled the film.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Robbie said, “We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led – not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story – which we thought would’ve been really cool. But I guess they don’t want to do it.”
There were also reports of another reboot, which was allegedly being developed by Ted Elliott and Craig Mazin. However, there have been no updates regarding this reboot as well.
Johnny Depp is considered the face of the franchise. And since the studio dropped the actor following the accusations of domestic abuse, fans have also made it clear that they don’t want another film in the franchise without the Jack Sparrow actor.
This could be the reason Disney decided to scrap the spin-off. The studio could also cancel Ted Elliott and Craig Mazin’s reboot as not many updates about it are available.
The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is available to stream on Disney+.
