Star Wars is undoubtedly the studio’s most commercially successful theatrical franchise right after Marvel. Owned by Lucasfilm, the $51.8 billion franchise has generated endless profit through its films, television series, and merchandise. And after 2019’s The Mandalorian, which was a massive hit all over the world, Disney is reportedly planning on making the space opera franchise its focal point in the coming days.
According to reports, this is going to be carried out by wrapping up the famous Indiana Jones franchise which too, is possessed by Lucasfilm. This would make it easier for the studio to divert all its focus on Star Wars and the first order of business for the same is the rumored shelving of the upcoming Indiana Jones spin-off series.
The Star Wars Franchise is Rumored to Become Disney+’s Centre of Attention
As per industry insider Jeff Sneider, certain sources have confided in him about the Indiana Jones franchise’s days being limited at Disney+.
Just last November, Disney, and Lucasfilm announced that an untitled Indiana Jones spin-off series was in the works. But it looks like the show might not see the light of day after all with the studio reportedly shifting its prime focus to the Star Wars franchise instead.
Star Wars has consistently produced glowing results through its numerous projects over the years, and The Mandalorian is a testament to the same. Created by Jon Favreau, the space western adventure ended up becoming one of the most popular shows to ever exist on Disney’s streaming service. According to a report by Variety, the Pedro Pascal-led space opera transpired to become “Disney+’s biggest show” after Hamilton. Not to mention, The Mandalorian‘s grand success further led to a treasure trove of Star Wars content on Disney+.
Given all the surplus that the Star Wars show produced for the company, it makes sense as to why they would want to plow more money into the franchise. But the question of the hour remains – is Disney making a clever move by investing in one of its highest-grossing franchises or is it making a grave mistake by placing all its golden eggs in one basket?
How Fans Are Reacting to the Possible Change at Disney+
For the most part, fans seem to be satisfied that Disney+ is apparently halting the production of more Indiana Jones content, relieved even.
And then others seem to be more devasted than content with the possibility of Indiana Jones being wrapped up so that the studio can focus solely on Star Wars instead.
Meanwhile, a fifth Indiana Jones film helmed by James Mangold is already on its way and will open in theatres in a few months.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is set to release on June 30, 2023.
