As fans eagerly await the release of Margot Robbie’s highly anticipated film Barbie, there is also a palpable excitement surrounding her reprisal of the beloved character Harley Quinn. However, the future of a potential sequel to Suicide Squad appears uncertain, leaving fans yearning for answers. Despite their enthusiasm, director James Gunn has been unable to provide a definitive response, opting instead for indirect hints that may suggest unfortunate news for the devoted fanbase eagerly awaiting further adventures with the iconic characters.
Recently speaking on Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum, the director gave a disappointing update on the fan’s most beloved movie series, breaking their heart into million little pieces.
James Gunn Has Disappointing News for the Suicide Squad Fans
The future of Margot Robbie‘s return to the DCU as Harley Quinn seems a little bleak following James Gunn‘s response. On a recent podcast, with Michael Rosenbaum, the director revealed that it won’t be his first priority in the years to come and did not make any definitive statement regarding the franchise. Upon being asked about the potential sequel, Gunn replied,
“But Waller’s first. And Waller’s a lot of the same people from Peacemaker. So I mean, this is all… But yeah.”
And on further being pestered, he simply ended the conversation with a “No”. During The Playlist interview also James Gunn expressed uncertainty about his next film project within the DC universe, mentioning the possibility of working on a movie related to the characters from The Suicide Squad, but remaining unsure whether it would be a direct sequel or another project set within the same world. He said,
“I’m not sure what I’m going to do next because it could be a movie outside of [DC], but it could be a DC movie that has to do with these characters… does that mean it’s the ‘Suicide Squad’ movie or something else that’s within that world or a little bit different than that? And that I’m not exactly sure.”
Thus his coyness may definitely mean the sequel is not in the cards and is ultimately not happening, which disappointed a lot of fans eagerly waiting for the movie.
Will Margot Robbie Be Retuning to the DCEU?
Ahead of the reboot of the DCEU, fans wanted to know if there is any place for Margot Robbie in James Gunn’s DC universe in the years to come. Although she has not yet been confirmed in any DC movie yet and is currently really busy with Barbie promotions, the director who loves to wander about on Twitter was bombarded with questions about the potential future of the universe that awaits the fans.
Fans are eager to learn about Margot Robbie’s future involvement with the DC Extended Universe now more than ever, particularly in relation to her portrayal of Harley Quinn. When a Twitter user directly asked James Gunn if he would work with Margot Robbie again in all caps, encapsulating the excitement, fans were surprised by his response.
While the filmmaker simply replied, “For sure,” he did not provide any details regarding whether he intends to cast Margot as the DC supervillain in a new project or explore a completely different path and project with her. Thus, Robbie’s potential involvement with the franchise remains a mystery for now, and fans suspect that if a sequel like that even ends up happening, it will not be conceived for the next 3-4 years or more.
The Suicide Squad is now streaming on HBO Max.
