2023 has been a great year for cinephiles so far, but it’s only the beginning. In July, three highly anticipated movies will hit the theatres, however, the question is, which one will hit the IMAX theatres? After several delays and shifts in release date, Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is all set to release on 12th July 2023. However, on 21st July, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie will also hit the theatres.
Over the past few weeks, several reports have claimed that Tom Cruise is in a battle with Christopher Nolan over IMAX theatres. The majority of the income comes from these premium theatres so it’s very crucial for filmmakers to make sure they get their films rolled in these theatres.
Tom Cruise and Christopher Nolan’s battle for IMAX theatres
Actor Tom Cruise‘s new Mission: Impossible movie, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, is all set to release on 12th July 2023, however, that means it will only stay in the IMAX theatres for roughly a week before the theatres play Christopher Nolan‘s upcoming film, Oppenheimer, which releases on 21st July 2023.
The release date for Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One has been changed four times by Paramount Pictures before finally deciding on the final date.
Greta Gerwig’s Barbie will suffer
The hype for Greta Gerwig’s Barbie is quite high, however, with Cruise and Nolan’s movie already battling for the IMAX theaters, it’s obvious that Gerwig’s Barbie will have to settle with normal theatres. The movie’s trailer dropped recently and without a doubt, fans are excited to see Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling’s performance.
Nolan reportedly shot Oppenheimer on IMAX cameras. He has been shooting his movies on IMAX cameras since 2008’s The Dark Knight. His movie is expected to spend at least 4 weeks in IMAX theatres and as per sources Cruise is trying to “split the screens.”
The new Mission: Impossible movie is expected to break records
Several reports suggest that Cruise’s latest Mission: Impossible movie will be a huge success just like his 2022 movie, Top Gun: Maverick. Sources also revealed that he is showing his movie to well-known cinema owners in order to secure a place in their theatres.
Apart from IMAX, Tom Cruise has also set his eyes on Dolby Cinemas, so it will be very hard for Barbie to reserve a spot in these premium theatres for at least 4 weeks. Given the hype, Greta Gerwig’s movie is expected to gross a significant amount at the global box office even without premium theatres.
