Director David F. Sandberg Regrets Tweet Blasting DC Fans for $598M Shazam Franchise Downfall: "You'll never hear the end of it. Exhausting"

The much-anticipated sequel to Shazam! finally made it to the big screens on March 17, only for it to fall flat on the expectations of the viewers and go down the drain at the box office as well.

Not only did Shazam! Fury of the Gods have an incredibly underwhelming debut weekend, but it also seems to have disappointed fans and critics to a great extent. So much so that people are blasting the Zachary Levi-led sequel online for what is being deemed as a dwindling plot, redundant punchlines, and unconvincing performances crammed into a movie.

After scoring low reviews from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, despite gaining a glowing 88% rating from the audience, Shazam 2‘s director David F. Sandberg decided to share his take on the matter. But it looks like that decision might have just backfired on him instead.

David F. Sandberg’s Tweet About Shazam 2 Gets Backlash

Shazam! Fury of the Gods had a disheartening opening weekend and received even more displeasing reviews from fans. Grossing merely $30.5 million in the domestic circuit even after being released across 4,071 theaters, the unexpectedly sub-par sequel was met with the harsh brunt of mediocre ratings and half-hearted earnings.

In light of the same, the movie’s director, David F. Sandberg, decided to address the situation as he talked about the Rotten Tomatoes that Shazam! Fury of the Gods received and how the success of the film, or the lack thereof, calls for a much-needed change in his career. Not that he regrets directing the Shazam films, he’s just more inclined toward going back to the horror genre and even trying out new things that the film industry has to offer for that matter. But “after six years of Shazam [he’s] definitely done with superheroes for now.”

The Anabelle: Creation director further remarked how the one thing that he has “really been looking forward to is disconnecting from the superhero discourse online,” something that puts him under great duress and yet another reason why he’d be happy to entertain a change in life.

As it turns out though, that very comment by Sandberg on wanting to extricate himself from the all the negativity associated with the seemingly toxic superhero and comic book culture seems to have misfired on him shortly after the tweet was transformed into a Reddit post about how the 42-year-old filmmaker is rendering the DCU fanbase culpable for the failure of his latest Shazam sequel.

Sandberg went ahead to post about how the words from his previous tweets seem to have been twisted into something they weren’t as fingers are now being pointed at him for “blaming fans” on the Shazam 2‘s disappointing performance. The Lights Out director stated that it is utterly “exhausting” and he’s sure he won’t be hearing the end of this now.
