Michelle Yeoh revealed that upon seeing just how much fame Everything Everywhere All At Once was getting, Jackie Chan had texted her. The two have been friends for a long time now. She confirmed that the movie was originally going to focus on a male lead rather than a female one. The script was crafted keeping in mind Jackie Chan to be playing the protagonist with Yeoh’s character playing his wife.
“They wrote it that way, with Jackie, and me as his wife. So the roles were completely reversed. I remember Jackie texting me and saying, ‘Congratulations! You know your boys came to see me first.’ I’m like, ‘thank you bro, you did me a huge favor.'”
The actress confirmed that the Daniels had changed the script after approaching Chan. His rejection of the movie had purely benefited Yeoh and gave her the opportunity of being nominated for an Academy Award. Seeing that the role could have very easily been taken away from the actress before, she was really happy to know that he had stepped away from the role and she had gotten it instead.
