Did Marvel Studios Create She-Hulk Series as a Family-Friendly, Non R-Rated Answer to the Foul-Mouthed Deadpool

When Deadpool came out in 2016, it became an instant hit among the youth. A foul-mouthed hero/villain character in the morally gray area was something unheard of (The Boys wasn’t released yet). The merc with a mouth is now being compared to the cousin of Bruce Banner in the premiere episode of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.

Breaking the 4th wall in She-Hulk

Before Ryan Reynolds decided to just do the unthinkable move of playing Deadpool, it was She-Hulk who first started the tradition of breaking the fourth wall way before Deadpool ever did. Jon Bryne’s 1989 comics Sensational She-Hulk saw the titular character of Jeniffer Walters aka She-Hulk interacting with the audience/readers.

Being fully aware that she is in a comic book, the attorney would often engage in a humorous situation to interact with the audience and frequently be self-aware of her role as a comic book character.

This trend became very popular with the release of Deadpool in 2016. The disfigured face of Wade Wilson made the character rage out at moments of stress and being aware of his surroundings i.e., being aware of being in a comic book/movie. This would prove to be a successful move for the people over at She-Hulk since the breaking of the fourth wall was observed in the premiere episode of the series.

While being true to the comics, the cousin of Bruce Banner is seen interacting and engaging with the audience and breaking the fourth wall occasionally. Portrayed by Tatiana Maslany, She-Hulk is seen talking about her feelings, her emotions, and what she is thinking often with the audience. Therefore, fans couldn’t help but notice that She-Hulk is a friendlier version of the Merc with a mouth, Deadpool. Since the recent hype around a potential release of Deadpool 3, it would be fun to watch if both the characters met in the MCU.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law premiered its first episode on 18th August 2022 and is available to stream worldwide on Disney+.
