Vin Diesel Compares His Franchise to J.R.R. Tolkien’s One
Vin Diesel in an interview with Variety opens up after the interviewer asked Diesel if it was harder to continue the franchise or does his back hurt, the actor throws a short tantrum joking his back hurts as he bends over. But he replies that it was obviously hard after a point of time. He further explains that it was not the filming process that was the main obstacle, it was the work of the screen, the making of new plots for every movie, and the expansion of the franchise.
“You know what gets harder? The work off-screen. The thinking, the expanding… there’s a reason why Tolkien stopped writing after a while because it’s so hard to continue mythologies. Nobody thinks about it in that context, but it’s real.”
Vin Diesel adds that this exact reason was why J.R.R. Tolkien stopped writing the Lord of the Rings after a while and explains that it becomes way too hard to continue “mythologies” and it is slightly losing its fan base from when the franchise was at its prime, producing multi-billion dollar movies. Later in the interview, the interviewer comments about the Fast & Furious franchise, “It’s the Lord of the Rings of action movies” to which Diesel readily agrees and compliments the interviewer.
The Fast & Furious and The Lord of the Rings Franchise
The Fast & Furious franchise is one of the longest-running franchises in Hollywood as its first movie was released way back in 2001, The Fast and the Furious where Vin Diesel and the late Paul Walker were the main leads of the movie. They went on to release multiple bangers and were one of the most famous upcoming franchises. The franchise’s seventh installment, Furious 7 had the most successful release at the box office as it amassed a total of more than $1.5 billion. Many other movies were also close to the billion-dollar mark and received mostly positive critic reviews.

The Lord of the Rings franchise is also one of the oldest franchises out there though they stopped making movies after their trilogy, it is held as one the best from its generation. In 2001 the first movie The Fellowship of the Rings was released followed by the sequel in 2002 and to complete the trilogy, another in 2003. These epic fantasy novels were written by J.R.R. Tolkien and then made into an adaptation which was then directed by Peter Jackson. Three of these movies had a similar effect at the box office as they could not collect more than $400 million. It even received a prequel series on Prime Video called The Rings of Power.
