The Fast and Furious franchise is a global phenomenon that has captivated audiences with its high-octane action, thrilling car races, and an ensemble of diverse characters. Since its inception in 2001 with the release of The Fast and the Furious, the franchise has evolved into a multi-billion dollar mammoth, spanning nine mainline films, spin-offs, and various merchandise. While Vin Diesel leads the cast, Jason Momoa and Brie Larson have recently joined the ensemble of the latest movie.
One of the main reasons for the franchise’s popularity is its ability to combine fast-paced action sequences with a strong emphasis on the importance of family. The series has struck a chord with viewers by portraying a tight-knit group of characters who go to great lengths to protect and support each other. But their pay grades are miles apart. And Brie Larson might be the latest victim of pay disparity.
Jason Momoa Cashing A Bigger Cheque Than Brie Larson
Brie Larson will be seen playing the role of Tess in the latest film in the franchise, Fast X. Besides, Jason Momoa will be seen donning the role of the new antagonist for the film. Speaking of their pay for the film, Momoa will be making five times more money than the Captain Marvel actress.
Reportedly, Brie Larson will receive a cheque of $1 million for Fast X, in contrast to the $5 million payout for the Aquaman actor. The franchise features big names from the industry, including Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, and John Cena. The franchise also has known actresses in important roles; however, their payout is nowhere close to what their male counterparts make from the Fast and Furious saga.
For the latest Fast X film, Vin Diesel is said to make $20 million, while Jason Statham will receive $15 million for reprising his role. Besides, John Cena will get $2 million for his role as Dom Toretto’s brother. Tyrese Gibson and Ludacris will make $1 million and $600,000, respectively. On the other hand, female actresses, including Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster, will receive $2.5 million and $800,000, respectively.
Is Pay Disparity Plaguing Fast and Furious Franchise
The difference between Brie Larson’s and Jason Momoa’s salaries adds weight to the pay disparity debate. Pay disparity in Hollywood has long been a subject of scrutiny and criticism. It refers to the wage gap between male and female actors and the lack of representation and equal opportunities for actors from underrepresented groups. The issue gained significant attention in recent years as gender and racial inequalities in the industry came to the forefront of public discourse.
Historically, male actors in Hollywood have commanded higher salaries compared to their female counterparts. This pay gap has been attributed to a variety of factors, including ingrained gender biases, industry norms, and the perception of marketability. Major actresses have spoken out about the pay disparity they have experienced, highlighting instances where male actors with similar or even lesser star power were paid significantly more for the same role.
Fast X, the 10th installment in the franchise starring Brie Larson and Jason Momoa, is currently running in theatres.
