Tom Holland’s skyrocketing career after his mainstream debut as the comic book superhero Spider-Man has given the Marvel-famed actor leeway to devote some time to projects that are not critically acclaimed or commercially successful blockbusters.
However, these projects have not been without its fair share of aftereffects on the actor. One of his upcoming projects at Apple TV+ has brought Holland close to a breakdown, leading him to take measures to step away from everything that has had an adverse effect on his mental health.
Tom Holland Triggers His Mental Health With Apple TV+ Role
Tom Holland took his fans by surprise when he declared he was taking a break from social media and focusing on prioritizing his mental health. Up until then, Holland’s devoted and massive fanbase was not aware of the extent of his struggles and how they had affected the actor in the aftermath of his overbearing Marvel fame and the consequent darker roles he portrayed in films like Cherry and The Devil All the Time.
More recently, the actor made yet another declaration that took the people by surprise: that he was 14 months sober. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, it was revealed that the actor’s role in an upcoming Apple TV+ thriller took a toll on his mental health after the role he took on to portray felt a little too close to hitting home.
Tom Holland Opens Up About His Mental Health Struggles
After a year of struggling in the enclosed space of his immediate friends and family, Holland has come clean about what originally triggered his mental health. Speaking of his role in the series, the Spider-Man: Homecoming actor revealed how portraying the lead in a new thriller series opened up a pandora’s box of fears and trauma-based response that sounds frightening, to say the least.
“I was seeing myself in [the character], but in my personal life. I remember having a bit of a meltdown at home and thinking, like, ‘I’m going to shave my head. I need to shave my head because I need to get rid of this character.’ And, obviously, we were mid-shooting, so I decided not to… It was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced before.
Learning about mental health and the power of it, and speaking to psychiatrists about Danny and Billy’s struggles, has been something that has been so informative to my own life.”
The Crowded Room is based on the true story of the 1979 shooting at Rockefeller Center and Billy Milligan who was arrested that summer due to suspicions regarding his involvement in the incident. Holland plays the lead, Danny Sullivan, based on Milligan on the show that comes out on June 9 on the streamer.
