DC is back with the origin story of another famous superhero in Blue Beetle. The name denotes three fictional superheroes who featured in a variety of DC comics since the 1930s. The character who will appear in DC’s latest film is based on the young teenager Jamie Reyes, who discovers that the original Blue Beetle scarab morphs into a battle suit allowing him to fight crime and travel in space.
The first trailer of the film was released on April 3rd, 2023, and gained many views with fans trying to decipher the possible plotlines apart from it being a standard origin story. But the trailer also made the headlines for a controversial comment that was uttered by one of the characters who plays Jamie Reyes’ family member in the film.
Blue Beetle Trailer Faces Flak for Batman Comment
The trailer of DC’s Blue Beetle is out and fans are eagerly looking for hints in the clip that will give them an idea about what to expect from the narrative. From the initial viewing, the film looks to follow young teenager Jamie Reyes’ journey as he struggles to figure out the workings of the Blue Scarab. Veteran actor Susan Sarandon, who is expected to be the antagonist Victoria Kord in the film has also generated a lot of interest with her role.
But the information making negative headlines is the comment at the end of the trailer by Jamie Reyes’s family member played by George Lopez. When Reyes compares the exploration of a base to the iconic DC superhero Batman’s world, Lopez’s character replies with the statement,
“Batman’s a fascist.”
Blue Beetle director Angel Manuel Soto does not seem to be perturbed by the furor created by this comment in the trailer and has only responded with a laughing emoji and nothing else.
Blue Beetle Faces Backlash from Netizens
Despite Blue Beetle garnering a lot of hype with its trailer, the film has already run into controversy with the fascist comment made by one of the characters. The statement which involves one of DC’s biggest superheroes, Batman, has not gone down well with DC fans. Netizens have now taken to social media to express their displeasure about the same.
Despite the Blue Beetle trailer receiving lots of criticism, a few fans have given the film the benefit of doubt saying that the comment must be taken at face value and viewed as a harmless joke. The fact remains that Blue Beetle has started on the wrong foot with its trailer release and it will be interesting to see if DC and James Gunn will get into damage control soon for the sake of the film.
