Hence, it’s safe to say that DC almost dodged a bullet when Jared Leto turned down an iconic DC superhero role.
Green Lantern, an iconic figure within the DC superhero universe, has long held a distinct place in the hearts of comic book enthusiasts. Unlike superheroes like Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, who have been primarily associated with single characters, Green Lantern’s mantle has been passed on to a diverse array of heroes.

When DC escaped adding Jared Leto to their Universe
Since its inception in 1940, the dynamic concept of Green Lantern has seen eight different individuals don the title of Green Lantern, a fact that has contributed to its enduring appeal across generations. As a result, the character has emerged as a sought-after prospect for adaptation.
Over time, various actors came close to wielding the emblematic emerald power ring on the silver screen, only to have their opportunities slip through their fingers. Among the contenders was none other than Jared Leto.
At the time of Green Lantern’s casting, Leto was solidifying his status as a rising talent through standout performances in films such as Fight Club, American Psycho, and Requiem for a Dream. Additionally, he garnered acclaim for his role in Mr. Nobody.
However, eventually, things did not work out for Leto. The journey of bringing Green Lantern to life in a live-action format turned out to be a tumultuous one. After years spent grappling with development hurdles, Green Lantern finally made its way to the big screen in 2011, with Ryan Reynolds taking up the titular role.
But Jared Leto found his way into the DC Universe
Although Leto did not ultimately secure the coveted role of Green Lantern, destiny led him to a different corner of the DC Universe. In 2016, he stepped into the shoes of the Joker for Suicide Squad. Regrettably, his portrayal received criticism and was considered one of the film’s weaker aspects.
As a result, subsequent appearances for Leto’s Joker were axed, even though he made a brief return for reshoots in Zack Snyder’s version of Justice League. The actor’s venture into the superhero realm continued with his leading role in Morbius, a film that also struggled at the box office and faced critical rebuke.
However, despite the makers managing to dodge a bullet with Leto, Green Lantern, met a dismal fate both at the box office, with a collection of $220 million, and in the eyes of critics. The aftermath was a tarnished brand, resulting in Warner Bros. abandoning their plans for a sequel. This blow was substantial, considering Green Lantern’s integral role within the foundation of the Justice League, a fact that was accentuated by the character’s absence from the team’s cinematic debut.
