James Gunn Gets Emotional Saying Goodbye To His Last GOTG Project

In James Gunn’s recent tweet, the director expressed his excitement for the release of the final Guardians of the Galaxy film. He also told fans that the sound mix, which is an essential and highly anticipated part of the franchise, is already finished:

Finalized the sound mix for #GotGVol3 last night & I am just so incredibly excited to share this movie with everyone; I feel teary-eyed & supremely grateful for this journey. Despite the downs among the ups, what a wonderful experience these past ten years have been.”

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, as most fans aren’t aware of, almost wasn’t going to happen. Gunn’s plan for a trilogy was jeopardized after he was fired due to his problematic old tweets that resurfaced on the Internet. In the end, with the support of the fans, as well as the cast and crew, the director was reinstalled in his seat to finish the much-awaited space saga trilogy.

For fans who are already feeling the GOTG fever, Disney+ has everything they need to catch up before the final movie’s theatrical release. Both Vol. 1 and 2 are available to stream on the platform. Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, as well as Thor: Love and Thunder, where they had a brief cameo, are also featured in the streaming giant.

Other spin-offs include The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, a novelty concept yet an important segment in the GOTG’s narrative. There’s also I am Groot, a collection of shorts featuring fans’ most beloved tree alien in his baby version.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 Will Be The ‘Final’ Installment In The Trilogy

From James Gunn’s announcement, it seems quite certain this will be the last of his GOTG films. He has also repeatedly mentioned that this will be the last time fans would see “this iteration” of the team. Dave Bautista, who portrayed Drax the Destroyer in the movies, confirmed Vol. 3 would be his last appearance in the franchise.

Speaking with the Hero Nation podcast via Deadline, Gunn shared a statement that served as closure for the GOTG saga:

This is the end for us. This is the last time people will see this team of Guardians… I just want to be true to the characters, and I want to be true to the story and I want to give people the wrap-up that they deserve for the story.”

Despite the imminent ending of the franchise, James Gunn has spoken about what makes the final movie special. Not only Vol. 3 will be the longest film, but it will also explore Rocket Raccoon’s (Bradley Cooper) background. The director revealed in his previous interviews that the tough mercenary would be the ‘secret’ protagonist in the film.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 will arrive in theaters on May 5, 2023.
