Dave Bautista has got to be one of the few actors who got a warm reception universally after he decided to switch his career from wrestling to acting. There are exceptions like him, but people have seen a considerable amount of former wrestlers try their best to make it in Hollywood, like Kane or Triple H, to no avail.
However, Bautista’s case is completely different. After making appearances in numerous TV shows, the Guardians of the Galaxy star made his first breakthrough in the role of Drax the Destroyer in the James Gunn directorial. It’s been uphill ever since, but could he possibly make a switch in superhero franchises at such an age? His recent comments tell us he at least has an idea.
Dave Bautista Is In Full Support Of James Gunn’s Renovation Of The DCU
No one can forget the amazing amount of work that went into making the DCU where it is today (or until James Gunn and Peter Safran came along to lead the franchise). The franchise had known stars like Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck on their roster and its major releases were doing quite well until it went downhill with the skewed release of Justice League in 2017.
Zack Snyder, the man who indirectly had a lot of creative control over mapping out the DCU, had left the franchise after directing Justice League (or in truth, Joss Whedon did) in 2017 due to the death of his daughter.
Things never went the way that the people at DCU wanted them to go. Black Adam’s failure to meet expectations both commercially and critically ended with a lot of fans worried about the franchise’s future. Cue James Gunn and Peter Safran’s appointment as new co-heads of DC Studios.
Gunn and Safran helped revamp the DCU, possibly for the greater good, but it also meant that the departure of some actors was to come very soon. Henry Cavill was removed from the DCU’s roster of actors due to Gunn’s creative decisions, and even the third installment in the Wonder Woman movie series was put off.
This obviously angered fans and Gunn gave his reasons as to why such a renovation was happening. But despite all the backlash, there’s one unlikely supporter of Gunn’s decision to switch it up in the DCU, and that is MCU star, Dave Bautista.
Speaking to Insider, the 54-year-old openly supported Gunn’s creative decisions and gave a take of his own-
“I have had conversations with James about that but I think the direction he’s leaning in, completely rebooting that whole universe, he’s starting from scratch and starting younger and fresher and I think you need to do that.”
“I think for the DC Universe to be revived, you need to start from scratch, and I think you need to start with younger actors.”
As one can read, the last quote seems to be a bit of a jab toward Man of Steel star Henry Cavill’s unexpected return as well as the instant departure from the DCU, by the former WWE wrestler.
Dave Bautista Is Not Too Confident About Playing Bane
Ever wonder who the next Bane could be after the brilliant portrayal of the DC villain by Tom Hardy in The Dark Knight Rises? Dave Bautista is one such contender that many fans have always vouched for despite his success in rival franchise Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Guardians of the Galaxy series.
But it seems like the Drax the Destroyer actor doesn’t fancy a role asking him to play Bane either. During the very same interview with Insider, the Blade Runner 2049 star said that he’s too old to do it-
“You need to start to plan for the next 15 years, and I just don’t think you can do that with me. And I understand that. And, also, I have to say that I appreciate that because I don’t want to play a character that I can’t bring justice to it.”
“I don’t think at this point in my career that I can bring justice to Bane anymore. I just don’t know if I could handle the physical part, and I don’t think I would have the longevity to plan ahead for films. So, I just don’t know if I’d be that guy.”
Dave Bautista fans will have to sit out the hope of their favorite actor ever playing the villain that suits him so well. But fans cannot blame him either, reaching the age of 50 must really do a lot to the human body!
