When Netflix released Daredevil back in 2015, fans were rewarded with a gritty, intriguing premise revolving around the renowned titular lawyer-by-day, vigilante-by-night Marvel character. Lead star Charlie Cox was the one to embody the role of Matt Murdock.
Unfortunately, in November 2018, the series was canceled. Fans of the crime-fighter were regardless blessed when Matt Murdock made his official MCU debut in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Such an inclusion lit a flame of hope within the hearts of many.
Even recently, Charlie Cox’s character was seen making an appearance in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, which garnered remarkable traction. To make things better, the series which was initially canceled will now see a soft reboot under the threshold of Disney+. At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Kevin Feige himself confirmed the news of Cox’s much-anticipated return.
Therefore, things are looking up for the enormously talented actor who delicately and intensely depicted a marvelous iteration of the Man Without Fear. However, way before Daredevilleft an impressionable mark on the minds of many fans, Cox’s humble, grounded nature was charming the audiences left and right. In a 2015 interview, The Theory of Everything alum opened up about the exciting possibilities that had come about after he bagged the Marvel deal with Netflix.
Daredevil Star Charlie Cox Was Happy To Have A Job
While speaking to HeyUGuys, Charlie Cox expressed the relief he felt when his much-acclaimed Netflix series was renewed for a second season. Apparently, the Legacy actor had received the news at the same time as everyone did. It was confirmed to him in an email.
Upon getting to acknowledge the stupendous news, Cox happily remarked, “I was like… I have a job!” Furthermore, the spectacularly talented and charming actor expressed his gratitude surrounding the fan reception that the show garnered.
Following is what he said to the interviewer:
“You know, I felt like the response has been so great. People have been so enthusiastic about the show. And it feels like Netflix and Marvel are really pleased with the product.”
Owing to such a staggering response, Cox had assumed that the possibility of a second season was “on the cards.” He was quite hopeful about such sentiments translating into a potential pick-up for the series. The MCU star also attested to how much fun he had on set while filming Netflix’s Daredevil.
He then concluded by saying that it’s a “dream job” in more than one way. The opportunity of having been bestowed a second season felt dear to the actor. What Cox hadn’t known then was that he would proceed to steal the hearts of many and that upon the unfortunate cancelation of the series in 2018, the zealous audience would campaign day and night for MCU to pick up the series.
It has truly been a wonderful journey for not only the Daredevil actor but also the fans of the franchise.
Charlie Cox Discussed The Difference Between TV And Netflix
On the topic of differences between weekly episodic releases and Netflix’s binge-watching format, Cox provided his opinion as someone who has been involved in both mediums. According to the actor, the main contrast lies in the quality of the writing. The recent age of content has wired the minds of audiences in such a manner that the traditional TV viewing style is growing redundant day by day.
With Netflix series, one requires no waiting. From a writing point of view, there’s no scope for cliffhangers nor is there an active possibility of increasing anticipation (unless it’s a volume-based release) as it does not suit the structure.
Another quirk of Netflix’s format debars the show from having weekly reminders of what happened in the last episode. You can watch the series in one go, without having to wait for seven days in between. It’s modeled around convenience.
Following is what Charlie Cox had to say about Netflix’s series structure:
“As a by-product of [the format], the quality of the writing… the arcs of the characters and the storylines can be much, you know, lengthened out and much more subtle. And it feels more like a 13-hour movie.”
The sentiment is truthful but also quite intriguing, especially now that Daredevil: Born Again will quite possibly adhere to the existing Disney+ structure, which relies on weekly releases. It is quite obvious that the change in writing style and quality will be evident with a change in the structure.
However, one can only hope that the soft reboot does not diminish the legacy that was left behind by the Netflix series. Fans can only pray that Matt Murdock’s character is done justice. Either way, Charlie Cox has come a long way as an actor and a performer and the audiences cannot wait to see his artistic flair shine through once again.
Daredevil: Born Again will see its release on Disney Plus in Spring 2024.
