Last year in October, Henry Cavill announced that he would not be reprising the lead character Geralt of Rivia after the third season of the Netflix series, The Witcher. The first part of the highly anticipated season 3 of the show was released earlier this month and has been receiving positive reviews from fans. Amidst all this, fans are still wondering about the reason he decided to leave the show.
While there have been multiple discussions over the same, from scheduling issues to creative differences, nothing has been confirmed yet. And adding on to everything else, it is also speculated that Cavil left the show due to his character having fewer dialogues.
Why Did Henry Cavill Leave the Netflix Series The Witcher?
Ever since Henry Cavill announced his departure from The Witcher series, fans have been speculating the reason behind the actor’s decision. While he has not said anything regarding why he is leaving the series, initially, it was speculated that it could be related to his return as Superman.
But it was also debunked after his official departure from the DCU as well. And now a statement Lauren Schmidt Hissrich has brought in a new discussion that the actor was frustrated with not having many dialogues in the series.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the showrunner shared that Cavill wanted to open up his character for the audience and wanted more dialogues for his character. “A lot of the notes he was sending to me were about Geralt’s dialogue — could he, first of all, say more,” Schmidt told The Hollywood Reporter.
She has earlier shared that they had to cut out Grralt’s dialogues in season 1 as Cavill’s performance was on point even without saying anything. However, Cavill did not want to continue with it. Schmidt Hissrich also shared the different approaches she and the Justice League star had in mind for the show.
Henry Cavill Wanted the Show to Explore Geralt of Rivia
Henry Cavill is known to be a big fan of The Witcher game series and the book series and has said that he wanted to be faithful to the source material. Many reports also claimed that the British actor left the popular show due to the writers disrespecting the source material for The Witcher.
While nothing is confirmed as of now, the showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich has shared that she and Cavill had different approaches for the future of the series. Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, she said that everyone loved “Geralt’s fuming” in the first season. She further shared how they were able to represent the two things in a wonderful way.
“But Henry was saying that when you read the books you spend a lot of time in Geralt’s head. So how can we put that on the page? Meanwhile, I wanted to tell the story of him becoming a father figure to Ciri. So those two things coalesced wonderfully. He opens up to get Ciri to trust him, by speaking his mind and his heart more.”
While there were reports of creative differences between showrunners and The Witcher star, it has not been confirmed so far. Followed by the third season of the show, the Australian actor Liam Hemsworth will star as the lead in the Netflix series.
The Witcher Season 3 Volume 1 is now streaming on Netflix.
