Margot Robbie’s Barbie movie hit the theatres last week and after the first weekend has turned out to be the most commercially successful movie of the year so far. Many fans were unsure about how the movie would perform at the box office considering its release date clashed with Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. However, Barbie has come out with flying years and has had the highest-grossing opening weekends at the domestic box office of all the movies that have been released this year.

Barbie beats all 3 Marvel movies released this year to have the highest-grossing opening weekend

According to sources, Barbie almost made $162 million on its opening weekend last week to become the highest-grossing domestic opening weekend movie of this year. To everyone’s surprise, Greta Gerwig’s fantasy movie managed to beat out all 3 Marvel movies released earlier this year on its first weekend by a far margin. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse which was released earlier this year in June managed to make $120.7 million on its opening weekend and is still the highest-grossing opening weekend superhero movie on the list.

According to sources, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was closely followed by Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania which made $118.4 million and $106 million respectively on their opening weekends in the domestic box office.

Fans react to the Margot Robbie movie having the highest-grossing opening weekend

Fans took to Twitter to celebrate Barbie having the highest-grossing opening weekend among all the movies released this year so far and expressed their happiness on the return of peak cinema after the years of the pandemic.

Oppenheimer which was supposed to be Barbie‘s competitor also went on to make $82.4 million this last weekend. Some fans even took to Twitter to explain why Oppenheimer made less than Barbie on their opening weekend.

According to sources, Barbie has grossed almost $382 million worldwide against a production budget of $145 million so far and it has not even been a week since the release.

Barbie is currently playing in theatres.
