After creating a billion-dollar record with his DC movies, director Christopher Nolan came up with his 2023 summer blockbuster Oppenheimer, featuring Cillian Murphy as the titular American physicist. Showcasing the life and work of J. Robert Oppenheimer, through his biographical epic, Nolan turned his movie into one of the biggest phenomenons of all time.

Released in July, Oppenheimer initially earned $82M within three days of its release. Breaking its own prediction and setting a record, Nolan’s World War-based movie soon started gaining momentum to cross $100M. However, after more than half a month of running in theatres, worldwide, Cillian Murphy’s movie surpassed the $550M mark.

However, it’s not just Tom Hardy’s million-dollar movie that got shattered by Oppenheimer‘s collection.

Following the staggering $559M collection at the Box Office, Cillian Murphy’s movie interestingly pushed past three films to become the highest-grossing World War II movie ever. According to reports, Oppenheimer surpassed Michael Bay‘s Pearl Harbor ($450m), Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan ($482M), and Nolan’s own effort, Dunkirk, to wear the crown of the highest-grossing World War II film.

While there is no denying the success of Christopher Nolan’s movie in the World War genre, it is still lagging behind its initial opponent, Barbie. Evidently, the Barbenheimer phenomenon appears automatically when speaking of either of the movies. As Nolan’s Oppenheimer breaks records, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie generated more than $1B in the same amount of time. 

Oppenheimer is currently running in theatres worldwide.
