Hollywood’s about to be brought down to its knees now that one of its mightiest soldiers has joined the WGA battle.
The film industry has time and again bowed down to Christopher Nolan’s genius, hailing the unrivaled cinematic masterpieces that he tends to craft. Be it the iconic Batman trilogy starring Christian Bale or 2014’s Inception which landed 4 Academy Awards out of 8 nominations, Nolan has always made it a point to leave his audience utterly speechless. In the most remarkable way possible, of course. He’s the leading filmmaker of the 21st century after all.
And when you lose your best man from the battalion, you face the risk of coming undone. So, Hollywood better buckle up for this one.
Christopher Nolan Joins the Writers Strike ’23
The writers’ strike, which the WGA kicked off on May 2, has been continuing with full vigor ever since, and Christopher Nolan just joined the picketers. The British-American filmmaker, who’s renowned for his innovative direction coupled with the most intricate fabrication of plot and cast, has taken a firm stand against the injustice that Hollywood writers are currently battling. Nolan, 52, along with his brother Jonathan, was spotted right outside the Paramount Pictures studio in Los Angeles.
The Writers Guild of America kicked off the protest a week ago as a result of their ongoing labor dispute with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. Over thousands of film and television writers have gone on strike against AMPTP which represents 8 of the biggest fishes in the ocean – Amazon, Apple, Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery, NBC Universal, Netflix, Paramount, and Sony.
And Nolan isn’t the only one who seems to have the writers’ back. As the former demand an overhaul in compensation paired with job security in the face of the threat of being replaced by AI tools, a torrent of renowned celebrities has joined the march. While actors like Rob Lowe, Cynthia Nixon, Natasha Lyonne, and Jon Cryer were all seen protesting along the picket lines, others including Drew Barrymore, Olivia Wilde, and Elizabeth Olsen have extended their support from behind the fences.

As for the WGA strike, the last time such a protest occurred was 15 years ago and that was stretched on for months before things simmered down. So there’s no way of saying just how long this one might go on for.
Meanwhile, Nolan’s biographical drama titled Oppenheimer, starring A-listers including Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., and Florence Pugh is set to release on July 21, 2023.
