Christopher Nolan and James Gunn Might Get into a Disagreement Over Henry Cavill's Superman in DCU

Even after facing an unfortunate end, it has to be accepted that Henry Cavill’s Superman was one of the best superhero castings. Cavill, who was introduced as the Last Son of Krypton in 2013’s Man of Steel made a huge name for himself with the role. Besides garnering massive stardom worldwide, the star also impressed a bunch of elite personalities like Christopher Nolan.

Christopher Nolan is not new to the world of DC and has directed one of the best trilogies ever centering on Batman. The Dark Knight trilogy creator was a producer of Man of Steel and also came out as one of the biggest admirers of Cavill’s Superman.

Christopher Nolan is a fan of Man of Steel

Christopher Nolan is considered one of the best filmmakers of recent times. Despite his expertise in designing complex mind-bending plots with interesting characters, he made the critically and commercially acclaimed The Dark Knight trilogy. Although his association with DC didn’t fall under the big picture of DCEU, the director further involved himself in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel where he acted as a co-producer.

The Inception director was also a huge fan of Zack Snyder’s DCEU pilot and spoke highly about Henry Cavill‘s Superman. Nolan couldn’t stop praising and stated that his take on the superhero was remarkable.

“It’s very much Zack’s film and I think people are going to love what he’s done. I think it’s really remarkable to take on that character. Superman is a completely different character than Batman, so you can’t in anyway use the same template.”

Christopher Nolan was quite confident with Henry Cavill’s Superman from the earlier stages when he publicly admitted that the Enola Holmes actor would look amazing as the Caped Kryptonian. His admiration also progressed toward writer David Goyer who was a part of both Man of Steel and The Dark Knight trilogy.

“But David Goyer had this, I thought, brilliant way to make Superman relatable and relevant for his audience. Zack has built on that and I think it’s incredible what he’s putting together.”

Surprisingly, some aspects of Man of Steel also influenced Nolan’s Interstellar. While some may start scratching their heads to find the similarities, good observers must have found the striking similarity between the farmlands shown in both movies. According to Christopher Nolan, it was largely inspired by the style of Superman’s upbringing shown in Man of Steel. But with James Gunn replacing Henry Cavill in his new DCU, it looks like the two filmmakers have different takes.

Why did James Gunn replace Henry Cavill in his DCU?

The fans wanted heartily for the Mission: Impossible- Fallout actor to return in his Superman persona after we spotted him briefly in Black Adam. But as things turned out, both Henry Cavill and Black Adam ended up being a history of this new DCU.

It was reported that Cavill would no longer be seen as Clark Kent as he doesn’t fit in James Gunn’s DC makeover. This led to many fans speculating that The Suicide Squad director is a hater of this version of Superman. But the director took it to his social media and debunked them as baseless rumors. He admitted that he sees Superman as a priority and also debunked the rumors of hating Cavill as “False”.

James Gunn and Peter Safran’s take on the DCU is quite different as they wanted to introduce a younger Superman and Cavill didn’t fit that plan. On one hand, even though he faced massive backlash and his perspective might not match Christopher Nolan’s but it is somewhat of a necessary change after the debacle that DCEU has been. Now it will be up to David Corenswet in Superman: Legacy to shut the haters and prove as a worthy successor to Henry Cavill.

Superman: Legacy will hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
