Cillian Murphy gives an opinion on method acting for the role in Oppenheimer
In an interview with The Guardian, the actor was asked about his opinion on method acting, which is quite popular among Hollywood actors. However, Murphy does not seem inclined toward method acting. He said,
“Method acting is a sort of … No.”
He shared that the character has many defining characteristics like walking on balls of his feet or the vocal tic that sounds like nim-nim-nim. But the actor did not want to do those impressions. He shared that the director Nolan wanted Brillo-texture hair, so they spent a long time working on it to get the perfect hair.
He also talked about his voice, which has to show the ambition, madness, delusion, and deep hatred of the Nazi regime, which made him do such an unfathomable act.
Murphy added,
“He was dancing between the raindrops morally. He was complex, contradictory, polymathic; incredibly attractive intellectually, and charismatic, but, ultimately unknowable.”
“There are incidents in his early life that were quite worrying; very erratic.”
The actor shared that the incidents are mentioned in the film and the books.
Cillian Murphy likes to play complex characters like Oppenheimer
Cillian Murphy shared in the interview that he feels challenged when he gets a chance to play a complicated character. He likes characters that do not necessarily follow the traditional transformative way of storytelling. The actor shared that they need not be villains, but he is open to playing a villain in films.
“Villains are good if they’re well written, but if it’s one note or a trope, then they are dull.”
He added that he likes a script that allows the actor to showcase different shades of the character. One has to notice the exceptional ability of Murphy to portray interiority, physically manifesting intense human emotion without a word and a radiating fierce.
Cillian Murphy played Scarecrow in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. On being asked about his experience, the actor shared,
“It felt to me that it was correct and right that it should be Christian Bale for that part. But I remember the buzz of trying on the suit and being directed by you. Those tests were high production values. I have always said publicly and privately, to Chris, that if I’m available and you want me to be in a movie, I’m there. I don’t really care about the size of the part.”
Oppenheimer is going to release in theatres on 21 July 2023.
