If there’s one thing that Hollywood can never get enough of, it’s got to be Batman. It’s been almost 5 years since the caped crusader made his first live-action appearance on the silver screen. Batman, created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger has appeared in 13 live-action films altogether. Here are 15 Batman behind-the-scenes facts to get you even more excited for Pattinson’s latest installment:

1. BATMAN RETURNS
It took over four hours to complete the Penguin’s makeup. “It was four-and-a-half hours of makeup and getting into the costume,” said Danny DeVito. “We got it down to three hours by the end of the shoot. I had pounds and pounds of face prosthetics and body padding, and the prosthetic hands, which were hard to use.”

Michelle Pfeiffer complained that her Catwoman suit was unbelievably uncomfortable “It was the most uncomfortable thing I’ve ever been in, they had to powder me down, help me inside and then vacuum-pack the suit. They’d paint it with a silicon-based finish to give it its trademark shine.”

Michelle Pfeiffer was the director’s second pick to play Catwoman. It was Annette Bening who was initially cast as Catwoman in the film. She even attended numerous costume tests & fittings during pre-production. However, she lost the role to Michelle Pfeiffer because of her mistimed pregnancy.

It was Kevin Smith who suggested using a voice modulator for Batman’s voice. Every single Batman since Keaton has had a distinctive voice, but Ben Affleck’s very dear friend Kevin Smith suggested using a voice modulator for Affleck’s version to mask his higher voice.

For playing The Joker in 1989, Jack Nicholson raked a whopping $90 million. He was the top pick to play the supervillain and his 1980s hefty fee started at $10 million. He signed a deal with the studio where he was paid $6 million for every percentage of the profits.

The actor for Robin did a lot of his own stunts. Burt Ward was assigned a stuntman but the assistant director made him do his own stunts because his stuntman didn’t look enough like him. He went to the emergency room four of the first five days of the shooting.

The Batmobile used in the 1966 installment of the film was sold for $4.2 million to an Arizonian resident in 2013.

Michael Keaton was practically deaf inside his bat suit. He described his time in the costume as ‘ridiculous’. The isolation inside it the suit helped him develop the character.

The Joker’s iconic lip lick was started because Heath Ledger constantly licked his lips to keep the falling prosthetic scar on. This habit eventually became a part of the character.+

The Joker’s mask in The Dark Knight is apparently a callback. That mask had a close resemblance to the one worn in the Joker’s intro during the 1966 TV show Batman.

The Gotham City set was actually a full-scale set. No CGI was used to create the full cityscape scene. The same set was later covered in ice as the shoots progressed.

Arnold Schwarzenegger had a very elaborate suit for Mr. Freeze. There were 7 costumes made for him with 500 hand-hammered aircraft aluminum parts. Each suit was fit with 10,000 blue LED lights.

Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice and Captain America: Civil War were both released in the same year (2016). Both films revolved around conflict among superheroes.
