Charlize Theron bears no grudges regarding Mad Max: Fury Road, but she doesn’t mince words either, candidly remarking on the “incredibly challenging” conditions during production. In the 2015 franchise film directed by George Miller, Charlize Theron took on the role of Furiosa, sharing the screen with Tom Hardy.
The Academy Award winner has since disclosed that her disagreements with Hardy were so frequent that she went as far as requesting the presence of producer Denise Di Novi on set to prevent any further “disrespectful” clashes with her co-star.
Charlize Theron Calls Out The Harsh Production Conditions
Featured in The Hollywood Reporter, Charlize Theron confronted the notion that for a film to achieve greatness, it is imperative for either trauma or significant sacrifices to occur during production.
Charlize Theron expressed that while she initially welcomed the idea of being challenged as an actor, the grueling nature of the shoot made her reconsider. She described it as an exceptionally lengthy and demanding experience, one that tested her endurance like nothing she had ever encountered before. Theron concluded that she probably wouldn’t willingly subject herself to such an arduous ordeal in the future.
“And I hate saying this because I don’t ever want to encourage young actors or storytellers to believe that they need trauma or sacrifice because I really, really don’t believe you do, but there’s a little bit about the circumstances around that movie that I think gave it the magic. It doesn’t mean it has to always be that, but I do think somehow the lightning in a bottle that you’re always trying to catch happened on that movie. But, man, it was f*cking tough.”
Furiosa, the character portrayed by Theron, secured a prequel film, featuring Anya Taylor-Joy assuming the iconic role.
Anya Taylor-Joy Did Not Reach Out To Charlize Theron
Charlize Theron shared her thoughts, suggesting that she wasn’t privy to the details of the prequel’s production but hoped it was less strenuous. She emphasized her lack of resentment regarding George Miller’s decision to create a prequel rather than a sequel. Theron expressed her admiration for the talented actress Anya Taylor-Joy, who was now taking on a role she had once envisioned, with great enthusiasm.
“I don’t know what production on the prequel was like, but I want to believe it was less,” Theron said. “Listen, I’m not mad about [Miller doing a prequel instead of a sequel]. One of the greatest fucking actresses [Anya Taylor-Joy] is picking up something that I only imagined.”
Theron confirmed that Taylor-Joy did not make contact with her before commencing filming on Furiosa, which is scheduled for release in 2024.
Taylor-Joy revealed to IndieWire that her experience filming the prequel was marked by extreme dirtiness and a high level of bloodshed, surpassing even her previous work on Robert Eggers’ The Witch and The Northman. She hinted that this statement wasn’t made lightly, considering her history with those intense films.
