“Certainly didn’t need a 4th one”: Toy Story 5 Announcement Gets Blasted After Chris Evans’ Lightyear Failure as Disney Shamelessly Milks Legendary Franchise

“Certainly didn’t need a 4th one”: Toy Story 5 Announcement Gets Blasted After Chris Evans’ Lightyear Failure as Disney Shamelessly Milks Legendary Franchise

Disney CEO Bob Iger has reportedly greenlit one more movie in its popular kids’ franchise, Toy Story 5. The franchise started with the 1995 film following a kid’s toys who come alive in the absence of humans. Following the success of the first film, the studio has released three more films under the Toy Story franchise and a spinoff following one of Andy’s toys, Buzz Lightyear. The studio has also announced sequels and threequels for some of its most popular kids’ franchises.

However, people don’t seem too supportive of Disney’s decision as the studio is aiming for profits with its popular franchises rather than introducing new stories.

Disney to Start Working on Toy Story 5

During the Q1 earnings call, Disney’s CEO Bob Iger reportedly announced the studio’s future plans for some of its most popular franchises. According to IGN, followed by an average performance of the Toy Story spin-off, Lightyear, the studio has now decided to work on Toy Story 5. While the studio didn’t have details to share at the time, they said they would provide more information about these projects soon.

CEO Bob Iger described the plan to continue the franchise as “leaning into our unrivaled brands.” The renewed projects include Toy Story 5, Frozen 3, and Zootopia 2. All three franchises have been highly successful for the studio, crossing the mark of $1 billion at the global box office.

Both Frozen and its 2019 sequel have grossed over $1 billion, and the 2016 film Zootopia has also earned $1.02 billion for the studio. However, the same cannot be said about Toy Story 5.

While the last film under the franchise did manage to cross $1 billion, the 2022 spin-off Lightyear was unable to follow the same path as the previous movies in the series. It ended up with $226.4 million at the box office, and critics were not very helpful either.

Seems like Chris Evans’ starrer failure has led Disney to come back on track with milking one of their successful franchise. And people aren’t very supportive of the studio’s decision to follow the same pattern in order to make box office profits.

Fans Claim Nobody Wants Toy Story 5

Followed by the announcement, fans have called out the studio for “milking” the Toy Story franchise, as they claimed that the series should have ended with Toy Story 3. People claimed that Toy Story 3 had the perfect ending for the franchise, but the studio still decided to make a fourth film and a failed spin-off following Buzz Lightyear.

While fans seem happy to finally get a sequel for the 2016 family adventure, Zootopia, this is not the case for Toy Story 5. Many also claimed that Disney does not have any new ideas or new stories, and that could be the reason the studio is constantly trying to make profits with some of its most successful franchises.

Not just Lightyear, but some of Disney’s animated features were not too profitable for the studio in 2022. Strange World and Turning Red also followed the same struggle as Lightyear at the box office. Although Turning Red was highly acclaimed by critics, the film turned out to be one of the biggest failures for Disney with an estimated loss of $168 million upon its release.

The studio has not revealed the release date for any of the renewed films yet.
