Celebrities getting into controversies for some of their sensitive statements in the past isn’t something uncommon in the recent age of social media. And it seems actress Amanda Abbington has also found herself amid the cancel culture train, following her controversial tweets back in March.
Known for starring alongside Benedict Cumberbatch in the acclaimed series, Sherlock, she was revealed as one of the first stars of the upcoming season of Strictly Come Dancing. But after garnering the spotlight, netizens dug out one of her controversial tweets, resulting in extreme backlash from the trans community, which resulted in the actress deleting her Twitter account.
Benedict Cumberbatch’s Co-star Amanda Abbington Addressed the Backlash
Not long after Benedict Cumberbatch‘s costar made headlines after being announced as one of the first stars of the hit show, netizens threatened to boycott the upcoming season following her tweet. And following the heavy backlash Abbington received for criticizing a video of a drag artist performing in a “highly s-xualized way” in front of children, she decided to delete her Twitter account.
However, she did come forward to make a statement regarding the transphobia accusations, claiming she didn’t associate her comments with the trans community.
“But my tweet back in March was regarding a 12-year-old who was doing it in front of adults. And it just upset me because I saw a kid, a little kid, a 12-year-old, doing something very over-s-xualised. And I didn’t think it was right”, she continued, “I’m sorry if you feel like you would boycott Strictly for a tweet I made about a drag show. I am not a transphobic person, I am a firm supporter of the legitimate trans community. I always have been,”
This isn’t the lone time Amanda Abbington has been accused of transphobia, as back in 2020, Benedict Cumberbatch’s Costar landed in hot waters for her inflammatory remarks.
Amanda Abbington admitted her statements were stupid
Back in 2020, Amanda Abbington made some inflammatory comments against the trans community, stating “You cannot have a p-nis and want to be referred to as a woman.” Unsurprisingly, her followers didn’t take it kindly and blasted the actress, but Abbington was quick to apologize for her comments, as she admitted her mistake, claiming she wrote a “stupid” and “ill informed” thing.
“I did my research and I’m much more informed now,”
It does seem that landing in hot waters is becoming a pattern for Benedict Cumberbatch’s Costar.
