Mel Gibson has seen ups and down in his Hollywood career. Before finding himself in controversies, the actor/director had enjoyed quite a legendary career. Gibson has some brilliant titles to his name, both as an actor and a director including one of his most celebrated 1995 films, Braveheart which won five Oscars from ten nominations.
Gibson, however, found himself in severe criticism on a few occasions and those criticisms have definitely taken a toll on his career. As per reports, Gibson was in controversy for racial slurs and having admitted to assaulting his former partner, Oksana Grigorieva.
Robert Downey Jr Came For Mel Gibson’s Rescue
It is no secret that Robert Downey Jr and Mel Gibson are notable friends. The duo have collaborated in a few movies including Air America and The Singing Detective. The Braveheart actor also helped the Iron Man star in his difficult times. Following the big Gibson controversy, RDJ came for Gibson’s support. In his acceptance speech for the 2011 American Cinematheque Award, RDJ asked everyone to forgive Gibson.
“I couldn’t get hired and he cast me. He said if I accepted responsibility – he called it hugging the cactus – long enough, my life would take meaning. And if he helped me, I would help the next guy. But it was not reasonable to assume the next guy would be him.”
RDJ further said that many actors in Hollywood have committed mistakes in the past, “unless you are without sin – and if you are, you are in the wrong f*cking industry, you should forgive him and let him work,” he added.
RDJ said that Gibson has been a victim of cancel culture when he was dropped from his talent agency and out of work.
Mel Gibson Said Hollywood Is Not Forgiving
Of course, RDJ’s gesture was a big deal for Gibson at the time of his crisis but is Hollywood a forgiving town? Gibson did not think so, “No it’s not. They have to forget,” Gibson said. Also, the actor told Comingsoon.net that he was confused over Hollywood’s reaction to his controversies.
“I don’t even think they’re vindictive. I don’t think they think there’s reason to forgive. And forgive what to begin with? What are they asking for? It’s almost like can you please forgive me for what? What did I do, really? It is kind of ridiculous. So it’s kind of hard to pinpoint exactly what needs to be forgiven and I don’t consider that anything does because I didn’t hurt anyone. But you know, hey that’s life. It ain’t easy and it’s not fair. You’ve just got to slip the old water off the back and move on.”
But, like several major controversies in Hollywood, Gibson’s controversy also created a shockwave around it, in turn, the actor/director was highly affected.
Recently, Gibson starred in Michael Oblowitz’s mystery thriller Confidential Informant which is scheduled to hit theaters on 30 June 2023. Gibson is also set to get back to his director’s chair with The Passion of the Christ sequel The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection which is slated for February 2024 release.
