Although rivalry is synonymous with competition and is often witnessed in Hollywood among co-stars, it is rarely expressed publicly. However, at times, it appears only humane for certain actors to feel infuriated by outrageous situations. Something similar happened when Vicky Krieps expressed her frustration over Daniel Day-Lewis after appearing together in Phantom Thread.
Daniel Day-Lewis, who is often hailed by the industry and is regarded as one of the greatest living actors of his generation, was blasted by his co-star for his insufferable behavior on set. Following his Oscar nomination for Phantom Thread, Vicky Krieps highlighted her frustration over the actor’s method acting and the way he received special treatment.
Daniel Day-Lewis’ Fourth Oscar Nod For Phantom Thread
Set in the 1950s, Phantom Thread starring Daniel Day-Lewis as Reynolds Woodcock details a story about an intense and unforgiving couture dressmaker in search of his muse, who comes across the waitress Alma (Vicky Krieps). Elaborating the story of twisted romance and inspiration, the enigmatic movie was crafted with passion and patience that led it to the Oscar.
Previously winning the Academy Award thrice, Daniel Day-Lewis received the fourth Oscar nod for his lead role in Phantom Thread. Competing for the prestigious award, Day-Lewis, unfortunately, had to settle for 2018’s nominee slate. However, following his nomination, the actor pledged to retire from the industry, thus creating a buzz. Although it wasn’t the first time he decided to retire, it definitely started headlines, as the industry didn’t want to let him go.
Known for staying in character throughout filming the actor even forced everyone on set to address him by the name of his character until the last day of shooting. Often getting physically engaged with his onscreen character, Day-Lewis even stayed in a wheelchair and asked his crew to spoon-feed him while shooting My Left Foot, where his character had cerebral palsy.
Vicky Krieps Publicly Blasted Daniel Day-Lewis
Although Daniel Day-Lewis’ excessive engagement with his character makes him the acting legend that he is, his co-star Vicky Krieps was insanely frustrated with the actor. Calling Day-Lewis’ skills method acting, Krieps blasted the actor for his insufferable behavior on set. Going the extra mile and putting unnecessary work pressure on the entire crew, that too just for the sake of method acting, Vickey Krieps found that too much on the actor’s end.
Calling Daniel Day-Lewis inconsiderate and insufferable, Krieps claimed, working with the triple Oscar winner was a “traumatizing train wreck”. The actress even expressed her frustration over the crew who played along with Day-Lewis and gave him special treatment, all for nothing. Discussing the buzz he created on set, Krieps stated, “I didn’t know so much about [Day-Lewis’s] method acting” but when he arrived on set, people started whispering, “He’s here! My God! It’s him”.
Finding nothing exciting or different in Daniel Day-Lewis, Vicky Krieps stated, “I am a person who thinks we are all equal. We all sit on the toilet. I could see it all like a circus.” Although Krieps signed up for the movie with an open mind, she was soon frustrated with her co-star. “After half the movie, I was just really tired of it. Like: OK, I get it. It’s a game. I’ve played it. But can we just talk normally now, please?” Vicky Krieps mentioned to The Telegraph.
Vicky Krieps even mentioned how people behaved with her after she refused to treat Daniel Day-Lewis with superiority, unlike others. The actress mentioned feeling patronized by the way people expected her to behave.
