Halle Bailey has been making headlines a lot recently after the release of her new movie, Disney’s The Little Mermaid. The American singer and actress first rose to fame as being one half of the music duo Chloe X Halle. Bailey does not have much acting experience so it really came as a shock when she was cast as Ariel in the upcoming Disney movie back in 2019.
The Little Mermaid was released earlier this week globally and showed astonishing collections on the very first day.
The Little Mermaid made more than Chris Pratt’s Super Mario movie on its opening day
The Little Mermaid movie hit the theatres on Friday, earlier this week, and made insane collections on its very first day. According to sources, the live-action of Disney movie allegedly made $38 million on the movie’s domestic opening day.
To put things more into context and how much of an achievement this is, Chris Pratt’s The Super Mario Bros movie also came out last month and it only earned $31.7 million on its domestic opening day.
The fans react to the astonishing first-day box office collections of Halle Bailey’s movie
Ever since the announcement that Halle Bailey will be playing the role of Ariel, there has been unrest among fans regarding the ethnicity of the American actress. #NotMyAriel also went viral on Twitter and multiple other social media platforms because people were mad about the casting choice of Bailey as Ariel.
This has also left the fans divided on whether a ‘black mermaid‘ is a good decision or not. Some fans have defended the decision and explained how important representation is whereas others are not so convinced and are openly boycotting The Little Mermaid movie.
After the opening day collection of the movie was released, fans took to Twitter to comment their views about the same. One user decided to troll the racist netizens who were saying that the movie would ‘bomb‘ because of casting Halle Bailey as Ariel.
Many fans appreciated the movie for its opening day domestic collection and one user even categorized the movie as ‘Best live action film‘.
However, many fans looked at the matter more objectively and gave an explanation about why the movie is a flop already.
Despite everything, The Little Mermaid made great earnings on the opening day of the movie but it is still too early to say if the movie is going to be a success or not as the budget for the movie was almost $250 million without taking marketing into consideration. We’ll just have to wait and find out.
