Brie Larson has been a prominent figure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since she debuted as Carol Danvers, a.k.a. Captain Marvel, in the 2019 standalone film. However, the actress recently clarified that her inspiration to play the iconic superheroine didn’t solely stem from Carol Danvers.
Instead, Brie Larson revealed that she was largely drawn to the role due to another character – Kamala Khan’s Ms. Marvel. As Larson’s character prepares to appear in the upcoming film The Marvels alongside newcomer Iman Vellani’s Kamala Khan, it’s interesting to look back at how Larson’s initial interest in the role was sparked by a character who wouldn’t make her on-screen debut until years later.
Why Brie Larson Wanted To Play Captain Marvel
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Brie Larson explained that her decision to play Captain Marvel was influenced by the character of Kamala Khan, also known as Ms. Marvel.
“A huge part of why I wanted to play Captain Marvel was because of Ms. Marvel and what that meant. To see that character realized by such a brilliant human with so much potential is just a really exciting thing.”

Brie Larson praised Iman Vellani, who plays Kamala Khan in the Disney+ series Ms. Marvel.
“The perfect Ms. Marvel and the most incredible person and castmate. I’m so excited for her success and I’m so excited to see what she will do with her life because she can do anything she wants. She’s one of my favorite people on this earth.”
Despite its low viewership numbers, Ms. Marvel has been a critical success. The show currently holds a 98% Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the highest-reviewed MCU adaptation of Phase 4’s lineup.
The Marvels Release Date
Ms. Marvel‘s season finale included a post-credit scene that connected the show to The Marvels, in which a mysterious energy causes Kamala and Carol Danvers to swap places. This has left fans eagerly anticipating the release of The Marvels, which features both characters.
Originally slated for a July 2022 release, The Marvels was pushed back to November 2022 to allow for more time in post-production. While this delay disappointed some fans, it also gave the team more time to perfect the film’s special effects.
Although Marvel released the first official The Marvels poster in January 2022, there is still no official trailer. The studio debuted some footage at 2022’s D23 Expo, but this has not been released publicly. Fans eagerly await the release of the official trailer, which is expected to drop sometime in the coming months.
The Marvels will now be in theaters on November 10, 2023.
