Recently at the PlayStation Showcase we were all treated to a multitude of announcements, from Mortal Kombat 1 to the extended gameplay trailer of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. What was considered the worst kept secret at the time, the show was rounded off by the hardware announcement of the PlayStation handheld, currently titled the PlayStation Q.
Not much is known about it, for example the release date is sometime this year, with no hard date in sight, even as the year is coming to a close, but we now have some footage of the handheld in action, and it looks pretty good!
PlayStation’s Project Q Handheld is Finally Out There
Courtesy of @Zuby_Tech over on Twitter, we can see some disembodied hands playing with what looks to be a physical sample of the Project Q, showing off the triggers, the touch screen and the responsiveness of it.
No games are shown off, and at the time of writing the tweet is still up, but how long that happens with the efficacy of PlayStation and Sony’s legal team is another matter.

The Project Q handheld isn’t a strict handheld in the same sense as the Nintendo Switch, with the console relying on the remote play feature that is currently in use with the PlayStation consoles, allowing users to connect a variety of devices to play their games on the move. Whether the Project Q will sport an improved version or the same is unknown, and we’re unaware if the handheld will be able to play any game or limited, but with the year coing to a close shortly, we have no doubt we’ll be hearing more and more soon.
With the hustle and bustle of daily life, many of us welcomed the announcement of a new PlayStation handheld, long missing the portability of the PSP, but the remote play feature dependency was a sticking point for a lot of people, and as of yet nothing more has been announced regarding that.
On the flip side of any potential drawbacks, it does mean that unlike the PSP, we won’t be having to buy dedicated games for the console. One purchase of a game should mean the ability to play on two devices, much like a purchase on Steam allows players to play on their PC, laptop, or the more recent Steam Deck.

The video definitely doesn’t give much away with regards to the capabilities of the handheld, and it is sporting a God awful placed screen protector which obscures certain parts of the screen. Is this legit? Or a cleverly made fan video? Only time will tell.
What do you make of the upcoming Project Q handheld? Are you going to be picking one up? Does the video sway you one way or the other? Let us know in the comments!
